Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the comprehensive installation, ongoing maintenance, and complex repair of a wide array of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems.
  • Systematically diagnose and troubleshoot intricate electrical and mechanical faults within HVAC systems, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools, wiring diagrams, and schematics to pinpoint root causes.
  • Perform regularly scheduled preventive maintenance on heating and cooling equipment, including cleaning coils, changing filters, lubricating moving parts, and checking refrigerant levels to ensure peak efficiency.
  • Respond with urgency to emergency repair calls, efficiently assessing the situation and implementing prompt, effective solutions to restore functionality and minimize system downtime.
  • Skillfully install new heating, air conditioning, and ventilation units, including setting equipment, running ductwork, installing electrical wiring, and charging systems with refrigerant.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of HVAC systems and their components (e.g., motors, fans, pumps, thermostats, ductwork) to evaluate their condition and identify necessary repairs or replacements.
  • Expertly test HVAC system performance after installation or repair, using specialized tools like pressure gauges, thermometers, and airflow meters to verify operations meet manufacturer specifications.
  • Master the art of brazing and soldering to repair pipes and connect tubing for refrigerant lines and other system components, ensuring leak-free and durable connections.
  • Adhere strictly to all federal, state, and local codes and regulations, especially those concerning the handling and disposal of refrigerants (EPA Section 608).
  • Maintain precise and detailed records of all maintenance, repairs, and installations performed, including parts used, time spent, and recommendations for future service.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, tenants, or facility managers to explain complex technical issues, outline proposed solutions, and provide estimates for repairs.
  • Calibrate thermostats and other control system components to ensure the HVAC system is regulating temperature and humidity levels accurately and efficiently.
  • Identify and implement energy-saving measures, recommending system upgrades or adjustments to reduce operational costs and improve sustainability.
  • Manage and maintain an inventory of necessary parts, tools, and supplies, ensuring that service vehicles and workshops are well-organized and stocked for daily tasks.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, design specifications, and technical manuals to correctly install and service complex commercial and industrial HVAC equipment.
  • Safely work with low and high-voltage electrical systems, diagnosing and repairing wiring, contactors, relays, and other electrical components that control the HVAC units.
  • Perform service and maintenance on a diverse range of equipment, including rooftop units, chillers, boilers, heat pumps, split systems, and variable air volume (VAV) systems.
  • Utilize Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Direct Digital Controls (DDC) to monitor system performance, troubleshoot alarms, and adjust operational setpoints.
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with company safety policies and OSHA standards, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Collaborate effectively with other trade professionals, such as electricians and plumbers, on large-scale projects and complex facility-wide repairs.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work vehicle, ensuring it is well-stocked with necessary parts and tools for efficient service calls.
  • Complete detailed work orders, service reports, and other required documentation in a timely and accurate manner using digital or paper-based systems.

  • Participate actively in mandatory safety training sessions and consistently promote a culture of safety by adhering to all company and OSHA safety protocols.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • EPA 608 Universal Certification: Mandatory certification for handling and purchasing refrigerants.
  • Diagnostic Proficiency: Expertise in using multimeters, manifold gauge sets, anemometers, and other diagnostic tools to troubleshoot system failures.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to read, interpret, and work from complex mechanical and electrical blueprints and wiring diagrams.
  • Brazing and Soldering: High level of skill in joining copper tubing and other metals to create secure, leak-proof connections.
  • Electrical Knowledge: Strong understanding of low and high-voltage circuits, control wiring, relays, contactors, and motors.
  • BAS/DDC Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with Building Automation Systems and Direct Digital Controls for monitoring and adjusting modern HVAC systems.
  • System Commissioning: Experience in the process of starting up and testing new equipment to ensure it operates according to design specifications.

Educational Background
