Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems in both commercial and residential settings.
  • Conduct routine and preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment, including filters, belts, motors, and coils, to ensure optimal performance and prevent future breakdowns.
  • Expertly diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical faults within HVAC systems, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications for installation, repair, and maintenance projects.
  • Safely handle, recover, and charge refrigerants in strict compliance with EPA regulations (Section 608) and established safety protocols.
  • Skillfully repair or replace defective components, including compressors, motors, thermostats, circuit boards, and other critical parts.
  • Test the performance and safety of newly installed or repaired HVAC systems, making necessary adjustments to controls and components to ensure peak efficiency.
  • Install, connect, and calibrate system controls, including thermostats, humidistats, timers, and building automation system (BAS) sensors.
  • Inspect, clean, and repair air ducts and ventilation systems to improve indoor air quality and system efficiency.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to emergency service calls, effectively troubleshooting issues under pressure to restore system functionality.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate digital and paper records of all service, maintenance, repairs, and installations performed.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by clearly explaining technical issues, outlining proposed solutions, and providing guidance on system operation.
  • Ensure all work is performed in strict accordance with industry standards, local building codes, and company safety policies.
  • Manage and maintain an organized inventory of tools, parts, and supplies in a service vehicle to ensure readiness for any job.
  • Calibrate HVAC systems and their controls to achieve maximum energy efficiency and comfort for the end-user.
  • Interface with and troubleshoot Building Automation Systems (BAS) to monitor, analyze, and control HVAC operations in large facilities.
  • Perform seasonal start-ups and shut-downs of heating and cooling equipment to prepare for changing weather conditions.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install sheet metal ductwork, fittings, and insulation as required for system installations and modifications.
  • Conduct thorough pressure and leak tests on refrigeration lines and piping systems to ensure system integrity.
  • Generate accurate cost estimates and written quotes for proposed repairs, system replacements, and new installations for client approval.
  • Collaborate effectively with other tradespeople, including electricians, plumbers, and construction crews, on integrated projects.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in HVAC technology, industry best practices, and evolving government regulations through continuous training and self-study.

  • Support project managers with ad-hoc reports on equipment status, repair timelines, and material usage.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the team's maintenance procedures, safety protocols, and customer service standards.
  • Collaborate with facility managers and clients to understand their long-term comfort and energy needs and recommend effective HVAC solutions.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, safety briefings, and mandatory technical training sessions to foster a collaborative and safe work environment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • HVAC System Diagnosis & Repair: Proficient in troubleshooting and repairing a diverse range of HVAC systems, including rooftop units, split systems, chillers, boilers, and heat pumps.
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification: Required certification for proper and safe handling of refrigerants.
  • Electrical Troubleshooting: Strong ability to diagnose and repair electrical issues, including control circuits, motors, and wiring.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings and wiring diagrams.
  • Brazing & Soldering: High level of skill in brazing and soldering refrigerant lines to create leak-free connections.
  • Building Codes & Safety: In-depth knowledge of local, state, and national HVAC codes and safety regulations.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Expertise in performing comprehensive preventive maintenance to extend equipment life and ensure reliability.
  • Ductwork & Airflow Principles: Understanding of duct design, fabrication, and airflow dynamics for balanced and efficient systems.
  • Building Automation Systems (BAS): Familiarity with operating and troubleshooting BAS platforms (e.g., Johnson Controls, Trane, Siemens).
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Software: Experience using software to manage service calls, parts inventory, and customer records.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a certified HVAC apprenticeship program or graduation from an accredited HVAC trade/vocational school.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in HVAC Technology (HVAC-R) or a related technical field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of professional, hands-on experience as an HVAC service technician or installer.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience with a focus on commercial and industrial HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, VAV systems, and large rooftop units.
  • Verifiable experience working with multiple major HVAC brands (e.g., Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Goodman).
  • NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification is highly desirable.
