Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct leadership, mentorship, and daily supervision to a team of HVAC technicians and installers, overseeing their work schedules, task assignments, and on-the-job performance to ensure peak productivity and service quality.
  • Act as the primary technical escalation point for the field team, providing expert-level diagnostic guidance and hands-on assistance for complex or challenging service, repair, and installation issues.
  • Conduct regular site visits and quality control inspections to ensure that all work performed meets or exceeds company standards, industry best practices, and relevant building codes.
  • Manage the complete lifecycle of assigned service and installation projects, from initial planning and material procurement to final commissioning and customer handover.
  • Champion and enforce a rigorous safety culture, ensuring all team members adhere to OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and proper handling procedures for refrigerants (EPA guidelines).
  • Develop and deliver ongoing technical and safety training for the team, keeping them current with new technologies, equipment, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform formal performance evaluations, set developmental goals, and manage disciplinary actions for direct reports in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Interface directly with clients to understand their needs, provide project updates, address concerns, and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, acting as a key relationship manager.
  • Review and approve technician work orders, time sheets, and field reports for accuracy and completeness, ensuring proper documentation for billing and record-keeping.
  • Assist in the development of project bids and service contract proposals by providing accurate estimates for labor, materials, and equipment costs.
  • Manage and optimize the allocation of resources, including personnel, vehicles, specialty tools, and equipment, to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.
  • Oversee vehicle and warehouse inventory, ensuring necessary parts and materials are stocked, organized, and accounted for to support field operations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve logistical challenges, customer complaints, and personnel conflicts promptly and professionally.
  • Generate and present regular reports to senior management on team performance, project status, key performance indicators (KPIs), and budget adherence.
  • Coordinate workflow and job scheduling with the dispatch and customer service teams to ensure a seamless and efficient customer experience.
  • Uphold and promote the company’s brand and values in all interactions with clients, vendors, and team members.
  • Participate in the hiring process for new technicians, including conducting technical interviews and evaluating candidate skill sets.
  • Ensure all company vehicles are properly maintained, stocked, and present a professional image in the field.
  • Stay abreast of emerging HVAC technologies, industry trends, and changes in local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Develop preventative maintenance plans and schedules for key clients, ensuring the long-term reliability of their HVAC systems.
  • Manage on-call and emergency service rotations for the technical team to ensure 24/7 coverage for contract clients.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-Level Systems Knowledge: Deep proficiency in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of commercial and residential HVAC/R systems (rooftop units, chillers, boilers, VRF/VRV, heat pumps, and ductless splits).
  • Controls & Automation: Strong working knowledge of building automation systems (BAS) and direct digital controls (DDC), with experience in systems like Trane, Johnson Controls, Siemens, or Honeywell.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: The ability to read and interpret complex mechanical blueprints, electrical schematics, and control wiring diagrams accurately.
  • Load Calculation: Proficiency with HVAC design principles and load calculation software (e.g., Manual J/S/D) for proper system sizing and application.
  • Code & Regulatory Compliance: Comprehensive understanding of local, state, and national mechanical, electrical, and building codes, as well as OSHA and EPA regulations.
  • Certifications: EPA 608 Universal Certification is mandatory. NATE, RSES, or other industry certifications are highly desirable.
  • Diagnostic Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the use of advanced diagnostic tools including multimeters, manometer, combustion analyzers, and refrigerant recovery equipment.
  • Project Management Software: Familiarity with field service management software (e.g., ServiceTitan, FieldEdge) and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Refrigerant Management: Expertise in proper refrigerant handling, recovery, and charging procedures in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Installation & Commissioning: Proven ability to oversee the full installation and commissioning process for new systems, ensuring they operate to design specifications.
