Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and execute short-term, medium-term, and long-term hydro generation schedules to optimize portfolio value while respecting operational, environmental, and contractual constraints.
  • Create, validate, and run complex hydro-optimization models (e.g., using Plexos, GAMS, or proprietary software) to determine the most profitable dispatch of hydro resources in day-ahead and real-time energy markets.
  • Generate and analyze short-term and long-range hydrological forecasts for streamflow and reservoir inflows, utilizing statistical models, meteorological data, and snowpack information.
  • Formulate and communicate bidding strategies for hydro assets in wholesale electricity markets, considering ancillary services, capacity, and energy market products.
  • Monitor and manage reservoir elevations, river flows, and spill requirements to ensure strict compliance with federal operating licenses, water rights, and environmental regulations.
  • Conduct detailed post-analysis of hydro system performance, comparing planned versus actual operations to identify opportunities for model refinement and strategy improvement.
  • Perform stochastic analysis to understand and quantify the financial risks and opportunities associated with hydrological variability and market price volatility.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive datasets related to hydrology, plant operations, market prices, and weather, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
  • Collaborate closely with real-time traders and system operators to provide generation guidance and adjust plans based on evolving grid conditions and market dynamics.
  • Prepare and present clear, concise reports and visualizations on hydro system status, planned operations, and financial performance to senior management and commercial teams.
  • Model and evaluate the impacts of potential outages, maintenance schedules, and capital projects on hydro generation capacity and overall portfolio value.
  • Support long-term resource planning by providing expert analysis on future hydro capabilities, climate change impacts, and potential new asset integrations.
  • Analyze and interpret complex environmental regulations, such as those related to fish passage, water temperature, and dissolved gas, translating them into operational model constraints.
  • Conduct fundamental analysis of power and gas markets to inform hydro scheduling decisions and hedging strategies.
  • Develop and maintain shadow models and analytical tools (often in Python or R) to validate primary optimization software and perform specialized "what-if" scenarios.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on the company's hydro system capabilities and constraints during cross-functional projects and regulatory discussions.
  • Evaluate the economic trade-offs between competing water uses, such as power generation, flood control, recreation, and irrigation.
  • Continuously research and implement new modeling techniques, forecasting methods, and optimization algorithms to enhance the sophistication of the planning process.
  • Act as a key liaison between the commercial trading floor, plant engineering staff, and environmental compliance teams to ensure aligned and informed decision-making.
