Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate, monitor, and meticulously adjust a range of specialized dairy processing equipment, including batch tanks, pasteurizers, homogenizers, continuous freezers, and fruit feeders.
  • Conduct comprehensive preventative and predictive maintenance on all production and facility equipment to prevent breakdowns and ensure optimal performance.
  • Skillfully troubleshoot and perform emergency repairs on complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems to minimize production downtime.
  • Execute precise equipment setup and changeovers for different product runs, ensuring all parameters are calibrated according to specific recipe and quality specifications.
  • Uphold stringent food safety protocols by performing and documenting Clean-in-Place (CIP) and Clean-out-of-Place (COP) sanitation procedures on all product-contact surfaces.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and variable frequency drives (VFDs) that govern machine operations.
  • Monitor critical control points (CCPs) throughout the production process, such as time, temperature, and pressure, making real-time adjustments as needed.
  • Perform intricate repairs and rebuilds on essential components like pumps, valves, gearboxes, and motors.
  • Collaborate directly with the Quality Assurance team to analyze product samples, checking for correct overrun, weight, texture, and temperature.
  • Read and interpret complex electrical schematics, mechanical blueprints, and process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) to facilitate repairs and installations.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot industrial refrigeration systems, including ammonia-based systems, ensuring consistent cooling for processing and storage.
  • Manage the inventory of spare parts, tools, and essential supplies, initiating purchase orders to maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Document all maintenance activities, repairs, and parts usage with precision in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Fabricate or modify machine components as needed using shop equipment, which may include welding (TIG/sanitary), grinding, and milling.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians and machine operators on proper equipment operation, safety procedures, and basic maintenance tasks.

  • Actively participate in root cause analysis investigations for equipment failures or production deviations to implement effective corrective actions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance equipment reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Assist engineering and project management teams with the installation, commissioning, and validation of new production equipment and processing lines.
  • Support the facility's safety program by participating in safety audits, committee meetings, and promoting a culture of safety among all team members.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in all maintenance shops, utility rooms, and production areas, adhering to 5S principles.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Industrial Maintenance: Proven expertise in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical (up to 480v), pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Refrigeration Systems: Strong working knowledge of industrial refrigeration, with specific experience in ammonia (NH3) or Freon systems being highly valued.
  • PLC Troubleshooting: Ability to connect to, diagnose, and troubleshoot issues within PLCs (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
  • Process Equipment Knowledge: Familiarity with dairy or food processing equipment such as pasteurizers, homogenizers, pumps, valves, and continuous freezers.
  • CIP Systems: In-depth understanding of Clean-in-Place principles, chemistry, and system operation.
  • Schematic & Blueprint Reading: Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Welding & Fabrication: Skills in sanitary TIG welding and general metal fabrication are a significant plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

Associate's Degree or a certificate from a technical/vocational school.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of hands-on maintenance experience in an industrial setting.

Preferred: Direct experience as a maintenance technician within a food, beverage, or dairy manufacturing environment is highly preferred. Demonstrable experience working with ammonia refrigeration, PLC-controlled equipment, and sanitary processing systems will set a candidate apart.
