Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Operate, monitor, and maintain the facility's industrial ammonia or Freon refrigeration systems to ensure consistent and optimal ice temperature and quality.
Perform daily ice resurfacing using Zamboni or Olympia machines, executing precise patterns to create a smooth, safe, and professional-grade surface for all on-ice activities.
Conduct regular ice maintenance duties, including edging, shaving high spots, and performing controlled floods to manage ice thickness and structural integrity.
Diligently monitor and log all refrigeration plant readings, such as system pressures, temperatures, and fluid levels, ensuring full compliance with TSSA, OSHA, and other regulatory standards.
Execute the complete, multi-stage process of ice installation, from painting the concrete slab and applying brilliant white base layers to meticulously measuring and painting lines and sealing in vibrant team or event logos.
Manage and maintain the facility's reverse osmosis and water deionization systems, performing regular water quality tests to produce the clear, dense ice necessary for high-level play.
Proactively troubleshoot and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on all refrigeration plant components, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, and motors.
Maintain and repair all specialized ice equipment, including resurfacing machines, edgers, and v-plows, ensuring they are always in top operational condition.
Oversee the integrity of the dasher board and protective shielding (plexiglass) systems, performing repairs, adjustments, and complete changeovers between events.
Manage the building's HVAC and dehumidification systems to precisely control the climate within the arena bowl, preventing fog, condensation, and drips that could compromise the ice surface.
Implement and strictly adhere to all safety protocols for the handling of refrigerants, including participating in and leading emergency response drills for potential leaks.
Maintain detailed, accurate logs and records of all maintenance activities, system repairs, and chemical usage for both regulatory compliance and operational analysis.
Collaborate closely with event managers and sports team personnel to prepare the ice surface according to the specific requirements of hockey games, figure skating competitions, curling matches, and public skating sessions.
Perform seasonal ice removal and facility shutdown/startup procedures, which includes conducting comprehensive system inspections and preparing for the off-season.
Utilize specialized tools like laser leveling equipment to check and ensure a perfectly flat and consistent ice sheet across the entire rink surface.
Manage the inventory of essential supplies, including ice paint, resurfacer parts, water treatment chemicals, and safety equipment, and initiate procurement requests as needed.
Respond promptly to any equipment malfunctions or ice quality emergencies, which often requires being on-call and working during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Train, mentor, and supervise junior ice technicians or operations staff, instilling best practices for both quality work and personal safety.
Safely operate scissor lifts, boom lifts, and other heavy equipment to perform repairs and maintenance on systems located at height within the arena.
Conduct frequent safety inspections of the plant room, all related mechanical systems, and life-safety equipment to ensure the facility is compliant with all local, state, and federal codes.

Secondary Functions

Assist the general facilities team with building maintenance and repairs, particularly during the off-season or non-peak hours.
Actively participate in major event conversions, helping to install or remove protective ice decking, staging, basketball courts, or other temporary flooring systems.
Serve as a knowledgeable point of contact, addressing inquiries from user groups, coaches, or the public regarding ice conditions and schedules.
Contribute as an active member of the facility-wide safety committee and emergency response team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Deep proficiency in operating and maintaining industrial ammonia and/or Freon refrigeration systems.
Expertise in the operation, daily maintenance, and blade changes for ice resurfacing machines (e.g., Zamboni, Olympia).
Strong working knowledge of water chemistry, reverse osmosis, and deionization systems for optimal ice production.
Advanced skills in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical systems, including centrifugal pumps, VFDs, and automated controls.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, electrical schematics, and P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams).

Experience with modern Building Automation Systems (BAS) for integrated control of HVAC, dehumidification, and lighting.
Proven competency in performing precision tasks like ice painting, detailed logo placement, and line marking for various sports.
Thorough understanding of workplace safety regulations (OSHA, WHMIS) and emergency response procedures for refrigerant leaks and other hazards.
Practical skills in basic welding, pipefitting, and plumbing for system repairs and modifications.
