Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive first-article, in-process, and final inspections on a wide range of ignition system components, including spark plugs, ignition coils, control modules, exciters, and high-tension leads.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, 3D models, and technical specifications to verify component compliance with all dimensional and material requirements.
  • Utilize a variety of precision metrology instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, optical comparators, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), to perform accurate dimensional analysis.
  • Conduct detailed visual inspections under magnification to identify surface defects, such as cracks, corrosion, porosity, foreign object debris (FOD), and finishing imperfections.
  • Execute functional and electrical tests on ignition systems and sub-assemblies to verify performance parameters like voltage output, spark duration, and resistance are within established limits.
  • Set up, operate, and interpret results from non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment, including methods like Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) or Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), to detect subsurface flaws.
  • Meticulously document all inspection and test results, creating detailed reports that clearly articulate findings, measurements, and pass/fail determinations in a Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Generate and issue Non-Conforming Material Reports (NCMRs) for any parts or assemblies that deviate from specifications, and collaborate with engineering on disposition.
  • Maintain and manage the calibration schedule and records for all inspection tools and equipment to ensure their continued accuracy and compliance with industry standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025).
  • Perform rigorous receiving inspections on raw materials and components from external suppliers to ensure they meet procurement specifications and quality requirements.
  • Participate actively in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) investigations related to ignition system failures or quality escapes.
  • Audit production processes and assembly lines to verify that manufacturing and testing procedures are being followed correctly and consistently.
  • Assist in the development, refinement, and validation of new inspection procedures, work instructions, and quality control checklists.
  • Interface with design and manufacturing engineers to provide critical feedback on component manufacturability and inspectability (DFM/DFI).
  • Prepare and assemble comprehensive data packages, including certificates of conformance, inspection reports, and material traceability records, to accompany finished products.
  • Ensure the proper identification, segregation, and control of non-conforming, conforming, and quarantined products to prevent unintended use.
  • Train and mentor junior inspectors or manufacturing personnel on proper inspection techniques, tool usage, and quality standards.
  • Maintain a deep working knowledge of relevant industry quality standards and regulations, such as AS9100, IATF 16949, or specific FAA/EASA requirements.
  • Support internal and external quality system audits by providing records, explaining processes, and demonstrating compliance to auditors.
  • Review and approve supplier-provided inspection data and documentation to validate their quality processes and product conformity.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory analysis to investigate quality trends or production issues.
  • Contribute to the organization's continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process enhancements and new inspection technologies.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate product quality needs into tangible and measurable inspection requirements.
  • Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) meetings to help determine the disposition of non-conforming materials.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T): Expert ability to read and interpret complex GD&T callouts on engineering drawings.
  • Precision Metrology: Proficient use of calipers, micrometers, CMM, vision systems, and other measurement tools.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Certified or certifiable in methods such as FPI, MPI, or Radiographic Testing (RT).
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to decipher complex mechanical and electrical drawings and specifications.
  • Quality Management Systems (QMS): Working knowledge of QMS software and standards like ISO 9001, AS9100, or IATF 16949.
