Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Oversee and coordinate the daily clinical operations of the diagnostic imaging department, including modalities such as Radiology, CT, MRI, and Ultrasound, to ensure a smooth and efficient patient workflow.
  • Directly supervise a team of imaging technologists and support staff, handling performance management, annual evaluations, coaching, disciplinary actions, and fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.
  • Develop and manage staff schedules, including on-call rotations and paid time off requests, to ensure adequate and appropriate clinical coverage across all shifts and modalities.
  • Implement and monitor comprehensive quality assurance and quality control programs in accordance with ACR, TJC, and other regulatory agency standards to guarantee the highest quality of imaging and patient safety.
  • Champion a patient-centered care model by actively addressing and resolving patient concerns or complaints promptly and professionally, ensuring the entire team delivers compassionate and high-quality service.
  • Assist the department manager or director in the development and management of the operational and capital budgets, monitoring supply usage and identifying opportunities for cost containment.
  • Ensure all departmental activities and records strictly adhere to federal, state, and local regulations, including HIPAA, as well as all institutional policies and procedures for compliance.
  • Serve as a key operator and departmental resource for the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and Radiology Information System (RIS), troubleshooting daily issues and coordinating with IT and vendors for system maintenance and upgrades.
  • Identify staff training needs and coordinate ongoing education, in-services, and competency assessments to ensure the team remains current with and proficient in the latest imaging technologies and protocols.
  • Collaborate with radiologists and medical staff to develop, review, and update imaging protocols, ensuring they are evidence-based, standardized, and optimized for diagnostic accuracy.
  • Oversee the procurement and inventory management of all necessary departmental supplies, contrast media, and minor equipment, ensuring constant availability while managing costs effectively.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as patient wait times, report turnaround times, and equipment utilization, generating reports and implementing process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency.
  • Act as a primary liaison between the imaging department, referring physicians, nursing units, and other hospital departments to facilitate seamless patient care coordination and interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Coordinate the routine maintenance, calibration, and repair of all imaging equipment, working closely with biomedical engineering and external service vendors to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
  • Lead the comprehensive orientation and onboarding process for new technologists and support staff, ensuring they are fully integrated into the team and competent in departmental procedures and protocols.
  • Uphold and enforce all radiation and magnetic resonance safety policies and procedures for patients, staff, and visitors, serving as a departmental safety resource and promoting a culture of safety.
  • Maintain clinical competency by performing diagnostic imaging procedures as needed to support the team during periods of high volume, staff shortages, or to handle complex cases.
  • Play a key role in preparing for and participating in accreditation surveys (e.g., The Joint Commission, American College of Radiology), ensuring all standards are consistently met or exceeded.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to departmental performance and patient volume trends.
  • Contribute to the organization's strategic initiatives by providing insights on imaging technology, workflow improvements, and service line expansion.
  • Collaborate with business units and leadership to translate future service needs into technical and staffing requirements for the imaging department.
  • Participate in sprint planning, project management meetings, and other agile ceremonies for departmental and hospital-wide initiatives.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Clinical Modality Expertise: Deep technical knowledge of at least one primary imaging modality (e.g., CT, MRI, X-Ray, Ultrasound) and a broad understanding of others.
  • PACS/RIS Proficiency: Advanced user skills in Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and Radiology Information Systems (RIS) for workflow management and troubleshooting.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Strong understanding of accreditation standards and regulations from bodies such as The Joint Commission (TJC), American College of Radiology (ACR), and HIPAA.
  • Quality Assurance & Control: Proven experience in implementing and monitoring QA/QC programs for imaging equipment and protocols.
  • Staff Scheduling & Management: Competency in creating and managing complex staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage and skill mix.
  • Licensure & Certification: Must hold and maintain active certification from an appropriate national body (e.g., ARRT, ARDMS, NMTCB) and any required state licensure.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Associate of Science (A.S.) degree or graduation from a JRCERT-accredited program in Radiologic Technology or an equivalent diagnostic imaging field.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Radiologic Science, Healthcare Administration, or a related business or clinical field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

5+ years of clinical imaging experience combined with 3+ years in a formal supervisory or management role within a hospital, outpatient imaging center, or comparable healthcare setting.
