Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Manage the end-to-end import lifecycle for all international purchase orders, from shipment booking with overseas suppliers to final proof of delivery at our distribution centers.
  • Meticulously analyze products and technical documentation to determine the correct Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification, ensuring duty accuracy and compliance.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and transportation carriers to ensure timely clearance and delivery of goods, resolving any in-transit issues.
  • Prepare, review, and meticulously audit all required import documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin, and ISF filings.
  • Proactively track and trace all international shipments, providing regular, clear status updates to internal stakeholders such as procurement, planning, and operations teams.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations and the import requirements of other Partner Government Agencies (PGAs) like the FDA, USDA, or FCC.
  • Calculate, process, and audit duty, tax, and fee payments associated with customs entries, identifying opportunities for cost savings through duty recovery programs like drawbacks.
  • Investigate and swiftly resolve customs holds, examinations, and regulatory inquiries, minimizing delays and demurrage or detention charges.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve a comprehensive library of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all import-related processes.
  • Conduct regular post-entry audits on customs filings to self-identify, report, and correct any errors, ensuring a high level of long-term compliance.
  • Evaluate and qualify shipments for eligibility under various Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) like USMCA, gathering and maintaining all necessary certification documents.
  • Analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) for freight forwarders and customs brokers, participating in quarterly business reviews to drive performance improvements.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in international trade laws and customs regulations, assessing their impact on the business and recommending necessary process adjustments.
  • Collaborate with the Finance and Accounting departments to reconcile freight and duty invoices, ensuring accurate cost allocation and timely payments.
  • Manage the company's continuous customs bond, ensuring it has sufficient coverage for import activities and handling renewals as required.
  • Maintain a master database of imported product information, including HTS codes, country of origin, and vendor details, to ensure data consistency across systems.
  • Coordinate with warehouse receiving teams to provide advance shipping notices (ASNs) and necessary documentation for efficient unloading and putaway of inbound containers.
  • Identify and execute cost-saving initiatives within the import supply chain, such as route optimization, container utilization improvements, and tariff engineering.
  • Support the business by providing accurate landed cost estimates for new products, factoring in freight, duties, tariffs, and insurance.
  • Act as the internal subject matter expert on Incoterms, advising the procurement team on the best terms to use to mitigate risk and control costs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • HTS Classification: Deep expertise in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS) and the General Rules of Interpretation (GRIs).
  • Customs Regulations: Strong working knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations (19 CFR) and experience dealing with Partner Government Agencies (PGA).
  • Incoterms Mastery: Comprehensive understanding of Incoterms 2020 and their application to cost, risk, and responsibility in global trade.
  • ERP Systems: Proficiency in using enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, such as SAP, Oracle, or NetSuite, particularly the supply chain and procurement modules.
  • Advanced Excel: High-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and data analysis functions to manage and interpret large datasets.
  • Global Trade Management (GTM) Software: Experience using GTM software or customs brokerage platforms for entry filing, tracking, and compliance management.
  • Freight Forwarder/Broker Management: Proven ability to manage relationships and performance of third-party logistics partners.
  • Landed Cost Calculation: Skill in accurately calculating the total landed cost of imported goods.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Ability to analyze import data to generate insights and create clear, concise reports on KPIs like lead time, cost per unit, and compliance rates.
  • Documentation Auditing: A sharp eye for auditing complex international trade documents for accuracy and completeness.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
