Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Conduct thorough physical inspections of incoming international shipments to verify quantity, quality, and conformity against purchase orders, packing lists, and product specifications.
Meticulously review and validate all import documentation, including commercial invoices, bills of lading, certificates of origin, and other customs-related paperwork for accuracy and completeness.
Accurately classify imported goods according to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) to determine appropriate duty rates and ensure compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations.
Identify, document, and meticulously report any discrepancies, damages, non-conformities, or quality issues found during the inspection process, initiating non-conformance reports (NCRs) and corrective action requests.
Collaborate proactively with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and internal procurement teams to swiftly resolve customs clearance issues, documentation errors, and shipment delays.
Implement and maintain robust quality control procedures and sampling plans (e.g., AQL) for a diverse range of imported products, ensuring they meet both internal standards and external regulatory requirements.
Ensure all imported products adhere to the specific regulations of partner government agencies, such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), USDA (Department of Agriculture), and CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
Maintain precise and organized digital and physical records of all inspection activities, results, and dispositions, creating a clear and defensible audit trail for compliance and quality assurance.
Communicate inspection outcomes, findings, and resolutions effectively to key stakeholders, including supply chain managers, quality assurance teams, and vendors, providing detailed reports with photographic evidence.
Manage the quarantine and segregation of non-conforming products, coordinating with suppliers and internal teams on dispositions such as rework, return-to-vendor (RTV), or certified destruction.
Perform random and scheduled audits of imported inventory within the warehouse to ensure ongoing compliance and quality standards are maintained post-receipt.
Assist in the development, documentation, and refinement of inspection criteria, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and quality checklists for new and existing products.
Investigate customer complaints and product returns related to imported goods, performing root cause analysis to identify systemic issues and prevent future occurrences.
Proactively stay current with evolving international trade laws, customs regulations, tariff changes, and anti-dumping duties to mitigate compliance risks and advise the business on potential impacts.
Manage the collection and submission of product samples for third-party laboratory testing to verify material composition, safety certifications, and performance specifications.
Evaluate and report on supplier quality performance based on consolidated inspection data, contributing valuable insights to the vendor scorecard and strategic sourcing process.
Operate various measurement and inspection tools, such as calipers, micrometers, and material testing equipment, to accurately assess product dimensions, functionality, and characteristics.
Coordinate the final disposition of goods with the warehouse and inventory control teams, ensuring that accepted products are properly and promptly received into the ERP/WMS system.
Participate in cross-functional team meetings to provide expert insights on import quality trends, supplier challenges, and potential process improvements for the entire import lifecycle.
Champion a culture of quality and compliance within the receiving and logistics departments, providing formal and informal training on proper handling and inspection protocols.
Prepare and submit required documentation for duty drawback claims and other customs-related programs to recover applicable duties and taxes, maximizing cost savings.
Serve as a key point of contact and liaison with CBP officers and other government officials during port inspections or on-site warehouse audits, providing necessary documentation and professional support.

Secondary Functions

Support the logistics team in optimizing inbound container scheduling and yard management.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Expert knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations, including 19 CFR, and standard import procedures.
High proficiency in HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) classification for a variety of goods.
Strong understanding of quality control methodologies, statistical sampling plans (AQL), and physical inspection techniques.
