Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct, mentor, and develop a dedicated team of inbound associates, including forklift operators, receiving clerks, and material handlers, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Oversee the entire lifecycle of the receiving process, from scheduling inbound carrier appointments to the final, accurate put-away of all goods into their designated storage locations.
  • Ensure the precise and timely receipt of all incoming shipments, diligently verifying quantities, product SKUs, and quality against purchase orders, bills of lading, and packing lists.
  • Manage the safe and efficient unloading of trucks, containers, and trailers, strictly enforcing all safety protocols and proper material handling techniques.
  • Master and effectively utilize the Warehouse Management System (WMS) to process receipts, generate labels, manage inventory locations, and ensure absolute data integrity within the system.
  • Proactively investigate and resolve any discrepancies discovered during the receiving process, such as shortages, overages, or damaged goods, by coordinating with procurement, vendors, and carriers.
  • Develop, document, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all inbound activities to drive efficiency, consistency, and operational excellence.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for the inbound department, including dock-to-stock time, receiving accuracy, units per hour, and labor productivity.
  • Conduct regular team meetings and daily huddles to communicate departmental goals, provide performance feedback, share safety updates, and address any operational challenges.
  • Champion a pervasive culture of safety, ensuring all team members are thoroughly trained on and consistently adhere to OSHA standards and company-specific safety policies.
  • Manage labor planning and scheduling for the inbound team, adjusting staffing levels to align with fluctuating inbound volume and meet operational targets without incurring unnecessary costs.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with other department supervisors (e.g., Outbound, Inventory Control, Quality) to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted workflow throughout the entire facility.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the inbound department, implementing Lean, 5S, or other relevant methodologies to identify and eliminate waste.
  • Oversee the proper handling and storage of materials, confirming that products are placed in designated locations to optimize warehouse space and support picking efficiency.
  • Perform and supervise regular cycle counts and actively support large-scale physical inventory audits to maintain the highest levels of inventory accuracy.
  • Manage the reverse logistics process, ensuring that customer and vendor returns are inspected, processed, and dispositioned according to company policy.
  • Lead the training and certification of new and existing employees on material handling equipment (MHE) operation, WMS usage, and all job-specific tasks.
  • Address and resolve employee relations issues in a timely and professional manner, providing coaching, counseling, and disciplinary action as necessary in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Maintain exceptional standards of cleanliness and organization on the receiving dock and in all inbound storage and processing areas.
  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports to the Warehouse Manager, detailing departmental performance and highlighting any key issues or successes.
  • Ensure all inbound documentation, including receiving logs and BOLs, is completed with 100% accuracy and filed according to company procedures for audit and tracking purposes.
  • Evaluate the performance and condition of equipment in the receiving area, coordinating with maintenance teams for preventative service and necessary repairs to minimize downtime.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in cross-functional project teams to support facility-wide initiatives, such as new technology rollouts or process improvement projects.
  • Assist the Operations Manager with budget planning and resource allocation for the inbound department.
  • Engage directly with vendors and carriers to resolve logistical issues and improve the efficiency of inbound scheduling and deliveries.
  • Support the quality assurance team by implementing and monitoring inbound quality inspection processes and providing feedback on vendor compliance.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS): Advanced proficiency in at least one major WMS platform (e.g., Manhattan, Blue Yonder, HighJump, Oracle WMS).
  • ERP Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with how WMS interfaces with Enterprise Resource Planning systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite).
  • Inventory Control Principles: Strong understanding of cycle counting, physical inventories, and inventory accuracy metrics.
