An Inbound Worker ensures that goods arriving at the facility are properly received, verified, documented, and prepared for storage or subsequent internal distribution. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and efficiently unload inbound freight from trucks, trailers, and shipping containers, using manual methods or material handling equipment like pallet jacks and forklifts.
  • Meticulously inspect incoming shipments for any visible signs of damage, tampering, or discrepancies, and promptly report any issues to the shift supervisor.
  • Accurately verify the contents of each shipment by comparing items and quantities against purchase orders, packing slips, manifests, or bills of lading.
  • Utilize Radio Frequency (RF) scanning devices to scan barcodes on products, cases, and pallets to systematically receive inventory into the Warehouse Management System (WMS).
  • Perform detailed data entry to digitally log received goods, including item numbers, quantities, lot numbers, and expiration dates, ensuring high levels of accuracy.
  • Sort and segregate products based on SKU, product type, destination department, or other specified criteria to facilitate efficient put-away processes.
  • Securely build and wrap stable pallets of mixed or single-SKU products according to company standards to ensure safe transport and storage within the facility.
  • Affix appropriate labels, tags, or placards to received inventory for proper identification, tracking, and routing throughout the warehouse.
  • Transport received and processed goods from the receiving dock to designated staging areas, quality control zones, or put-away locations.
  • Break down and sort inbound cartons, moving individual items to the correct conveyor, bin, or tote for further processing.
  • Maintain an accurate and organized record of all receiving activities, completing necessary paperwork and logs legibly and on time.
  • Operate material handling equipment (MHE) such as electric pallet jacks, stand-up forklifts, or reach trucks in a safe and proficient manner after proper certification.
  • Adhere strictly to all workplace safety (OSHA) regulations, company policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to maintain a secure work environment.
  • Systematically manage the receiving dock area, ensuring it remains clean, organized, and free of hazards to allow for a smooth and continuous flow of goods.
  • Communicate effectively with truck drivers, carriers, and internal team members to coordinate and schedule inbound deliveries and resolve any on-site issues.
  • Identify and quarantine non-conforming, damaged, or incorrect products, following established procedures for returns to vendor (RTV) or disposition.
  • Handle and process incoming materials, supplies, and equipment for various internal departments, not just sellable inventory.
  • Consolidate and prepare empty pallets, containers, and other dunnage for return, recycling, or disposal according to environmental and operational guidelines.
  • Assist in the replenishment of active picking locations from overstock inventory that has been recently received and stored.
  • Continuously monitor inventory flow through the inbound process, identifying and flagging potential bottlenecks or inefficiencies to leadership.

Secondary Functions

  • Actively participate in routine cycle counts and periodic full physical inventory audits to help maintain the accuracy of the warehouse's stock records.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions on how to make the receiving workflow safer and more efficient.
  • Assist with the training and onboarding of new team members, demonstrating proper techniques and adherence to standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the immediate work area and broader warehouse environment, including sweeping floors and removing debris.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • RF Scanner Operation: Proficiency in using handheld RF scanning devices for receiving, tracking, and moving inventory.
  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS): Basic ability to navigate and perform transactions within a WMS platform (e.g., SAP EWM, Manhattan, Blue Yonder).
  • Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Operation: Experience or certification in operating equipment such as electric pallet jacks, forklifts, or reach trucks.
  • Receiving Procedures: Strong understanding of standard receiving and inbound logistics processes, including documentation verification.
  • Basic Computer Literacy: Competence in basic data entry and using computer systems to log information and look up purchase orders.
    -Inventory Counting: Skill in performing accurate manual counts and reconciling them with system data or shipping documents.
  • Safety Protocol Adherence: Knowledge of fundamental warehouse safety standards, including proper lifting techniques and equipment safety checks.
  • Load Securement: Ability to properly build, stack, and wrap pallets to ensure stability and safety during internal transport.
  • Reading Comprehension: The ability to read and accurately interpret packing slips, bills of lading, and product labels.
  • Basic Mathematical Skills: Competency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division for verifying quantities and counts.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of experience in a warehouse, distribution center, manufacturing, or similar industrial environment.

Preferred:

  • At least 1 year of direct experience in a receiving, inbound, or dock-worker role is highly advantageous. Previous experience using an RF scanner and WMS is a strong plus.
