Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Expertly set up, configure, and operate induction heating equipment and furnaces according to detailed work orders, engineering blueprints, and established production schedules.
  • Interpret complex part drawings, process sheets, and technical specifications to determine the correct heating cycles, temperatures, quench times, and equipment settings.
  • Securely load and unload a diverse range of metal parts and components onto fixtures, conveyors, or directly into the induction coil, ensuring proper alignment and positioning for uniform heating.
  • Continuously monitor machine operations, control panels, gauges, and temperature readings during the heat-treating cycle to ensure process parameters remain within specified tolerances.
  • Perform first-piece, in-process, and final quality inspections using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and various gauges to verify part dimensions and conformity.
  • Conduct Rockwell or other hardness tests on treated components to ensure they meet the required metallurgical properties and hardness specifications.
  • Execute basic and preventative maintenance on induction heating machinery, including cleaning coils, checking quench systems, and monitoring fluid levels to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose operational or equipment malfunctions, making necessary adjustments to correct deviations and minimize production downtime.
  • Meticulously document all production and quality data on logs, work orders, and computer systems, maintaining accurate records for traceability and process analysis.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols, procedures, and guidelines, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Identify and recommend potential process improvements to enhance efficiency, increase output, reduce scrap, and improve overall product quality.
  • Handle and transport materials and finished parts using overhead cranes, hoists, or forklifts in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Adjust and fine-tune induction coil setups and power settings to accommodate different part geometries and material types for optimal heat treatment results.
  • Visually inspect parts before and after the heat treatment process for cracks, distortion, discoloration, or other defects that may compromise quality.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, supervisors, and quality assurance personnel to coordinate production flow and resolve any manufacturing issues.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the training and mentoring of new or less experienced operators on standard operating procedures, safety practices, and quality standards.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, continuous improvement initiatives, and Lean Manufacturing or 5S programs to contribute to a culture of excellence.
  • Support the engineering and maintenance teams during the installation of new equipment or the implementation of new heat treatment processes.
  • Manage inventory levels of necessary supplies, such as quenching oils and maintenance materials, and report shortages to the supervisor.
  • Perform minor repairs and assist the maintenance department with more complex machine-down situations to expedite a return to production.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Induction Machine Operation: Proficient in setting up, operating, and troubleshooting induction heating equipment and associated systems.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to accurately read and interpret complex engineering drawings, work orders, and process sheets.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled in using metrology tools like micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and indicators to verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Hardness Testing: Competent in performing Rockwell, Brinell, or other hardness tests and interpreting the results.
  • Basic Shop Math: Strong understanding of fractions, decimals, and basic algebra for making calculations and adjustments.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Solid understanding of mechanical principles and the ability to perform basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting.

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

  • 1-5+ years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, specifically with machine operation.
