Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the architectural design process for complex industrial projects, including manufacturing plants, distribution centers, data centers, and processing facilities, from conceptualization through to construction completion.
  • Develop comprehensive and detailed architectural plans, elevations, sections, and construction documents that integrate structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
  • Collaborate intensively with clients to understand their operational needs, production workflows, material handling requirements, and future expansion plans, translating these into effective spatial designs.
  • Conduct thorough site analysis and feasibility studies to assess site constraints, opportunities, zoning regulations, and environmental impacts for new industrial developments.
  • Ensure all designs strictly adhere to relevant building codes, life safety standards, accessibility guidelines (ADA), and specific industrial regulations (e.g., GMP, OSHA, EPA).
  • Coordinate and lead a multidisciplinary project team of engineers (structural, civil, process, mechanical), consultants, and internal stakeholders to ensure a cohesive and fully integrated project delivery.
  • Create and manage 3D models and Building Information Modeling (BIM) data to facilitate design coordination, clash detection, and visualization throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Prepare detailed specifications for building materials, finishes, and systems, with a strong focus on durability, performance, and suitability for the industrial environment.
  • Oversee the construction administration phase, which includes reviewing submittals, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), and conducting regular site visits to ensure construction conforms to design intent.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively, providing regular progress reports to clients and senior leadership.
  • Develop master plans for large industrial campuses, outlining phased development, infrastructure requirements, and long-term growth strategies.
  • Integrate sustainable design principles and technologies to improve energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and lower long-term operational costs for industrial facilities.
  • Research and incorporate innovative materials and construction methods specifically suited for industrial applications to enhance facility performance and longevity.
  • Prepare and present compelling design presentations and proposals to clients, regulatory bodies, and community stakeholders.
  • Guide the integration of specialized industrial equipment, automation systems, and heavy machinery foundations into the core building design.

Hard Skills (Technical)

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 5-15+ years of progressive experience in an architectural firm, with a significant portfolio of completed industrial projects (e.g., manufacturing, warehouse/distribution, food & beverage, or life sciences).

Preferred: Direct experience as a Project Architect or Project Manager on large-scale ($20M+) industrial facilities.
