Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, maintain, and repair a wide range of industrial electrical systems and equipment, including power distribution, motors, controls, and lighting, ensuring compliance with all safety codes and operational standards.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on electrical systems, machinery, and control panels to minimize unplanned downtime and enhance equipment longevity.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex electrical malfunctions in machinery and equipment, utilizing diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and thermal imaging cameras to identify root causes.
  • Read, interpret, and work from technical documents, including electrical blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer's specifications, to perform installations and repairs.
  • Install, program, and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for automated systems.
  • Execute the layout and installation of electrical conduit, wiring, and fixtures, ensuring proper sizing, support, and adherence to NEC standards.
  • Connect power and control wiring to motors, sensors, switches, and other electrical components according to engineering specifications and schematics.
  • Perform comprehensive safety inspections of electrical systems and equipment, identifying and correcting potential hazards to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel.
  • Respond promptly to emergency electrical breakdowns and service calls, working efficiently under pressure to restore equipment to full operational status.
  • Conduct regular testing of electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices to ensure compatibility and safety of the system.
  • Maintain and repair AC/DC motors and drives, including motor control centers (MCCs), starters, and associated control circuitry.
  • Calibrate and service industrial instrumentation, including temperature, pressure, and flow sensors, ensuring accurate process monitoring and control.
  • Upgrade existing electrical systems and components to improve efficiency, reliability, and safety, or to accommodate new production requirements.
  • Ensure all work performed is documented accurately and completely, maintaining logs, records of repairs, and maintenance schedules using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Work with high-voltage systems, including switchgear, transformers, and distribution panels, following strict lockout/tagout (LOTO) and arc flash safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineers, mechanics, and production staff to resolve complex operational issues and support new equipment installations and commissioning.
  • Fabricate and install control panels and junction boxes, ensuring a clean and professional installation that meets all required specifications.
  • Manage inventory of electrical spare parts, components, and supplies, ordering new materials as needed to ensure availability for maintenance and repairs.
  • Adhere to all company, local, state, and federal safety regulations and procedures, actively participating in safety training and promoting a culture of safety.
  • Install and maintain plant-wide communication systems, including Ethernet, DeviceNet, and other industrial network protocols.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training to apprentice electricians and maintenance technicians, sharing knowledge of best practices and safety protocols.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and Kaizen events aimed at enhancing equipment reliability, process efficiency, and workplace safety.
  • Assist mechanical and maintenance teams with equipment installations, overhauls, and large-scale projects that require electrical support.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including personal tools, shop equipment, and electrical rooms.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • PLC Troubleshooting & Programming: Proficiency in diagnosing, modifying, and programming PLCs, especially Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix) and Siemens (S7) platforms.
  • VFD Installation & Configuration: In-depth knowledge of installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and servo drives.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Advanced ability to read and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics, P&IDs, and single-line diagrams.
  • National Electrical Code (NEC): Strong working knowledge of the NEC and local electrical codes to ensure all work is compliant and safe.
  • Motor Controls & MCCs: Expertise in troubleshooting and maintaining Motor Control Centers (MCCs), starters, contactors, relays, and overload protection.
  • Conduit Bending & Installation: Skill in bending and installing various types of electrical conduit, including EMT, Rigid, and PVC-coated.
  • Troubleshooting Methodology: A systematic and logical approach to diagnosing complex electrical and control system faults under pressure.
  • Instrumentation & Calibration: Experience with process instrumentation for measuring variables like pressure, temperature, flow, and level.
  • High-Voltage Systems: Competency and certification for working safely with systems up to 480V/600V, including knowledge of arc flash hazards (NFPA 70E).
  • Industrial Networking: Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, Profibus, DeviceNet, and Modbus.
