Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive, ongoing surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and communicable diseases using standardized definitions from the CDC and NHSN.
  • Analyze infection control data to identify significant trends, patterns, and unexpected occurrences, providing actionable insights to leadership.
  • Perform robust epidemiological investigations of potential outbreaks, clusters, and exposure events in collaboration with clinical and public health teams.
  • Prepare and disseminate detailed, accurate reports on infection rates, control measures, and outcomes for various committees, departments, and regulatory bodies.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of infection data to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and local/state health departments as mandated.
  • Utilize statistical software (such as SAS, R, or SPSS) and data visualization tools (like Tableau or Power BI) to create compelling dashboards and presentations.
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the infection prevention database, performing regular data validation, cleaning, and quality assurance checks.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurses, and pharmacists, to develop and implement data-driven infection prevention strategies.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and primary data resource for the Infection Prevention department, providing analytical support for quality improvement projects.
  • Develop and deliver targeted education and training programs on infection prevention protocols, data interpretation, and surveillance methodologies for healthcare staff.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on key metrics for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, tracking antibiotic usage and resistance patterns.
  • Conduct environmental rounds and observational audits to assess and document compliance with infection control best practices, such as hand hygiene and isolation precautions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of infection prevention interventions and quality improvement initiatives through rigorous pre- and post-implementation data analysis.
  • Assist in the development, review, and revision of organizational infection control policies and procedures to ensure they are evidence-based and current.
  • Interpret microbiological and laboratory data to identify epidemiologically significant organisms and potential transmission pathways.
  • Provide essential data support for accreditation surveys (e.g., The Joint Commission, DNV) and regulatory compliance audits related to infection control standards.
  • Perform detailed risk assessments for construction, renovation, and maintenance projects to mitigate potential environmental risks for infection.
  • Manage and investigate potential patient and employee exposures to communicable diseases, coordinating follow-up and communication efforts.
  • Stay current with emerging infectious diseases, evidence-based practices, and changes in local, state, and federal infection control regulations.
  • Translate complex clinical and epidemiological findings into clear, concise summaries for non-technical audiences, including senior leadership.
  • Automate and streamline data collection and reporting processes to improve efficiency and allow for more time dedicated to in-depth analysis.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Direct experience with CDC/NHSN surveillance definitions and reporting requirements is strongly preferred.
