Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develops, implements, evaluates, and continuously improves the organization-wide infection prevention and control program to ensure it meets the needs of our patient population.
- Conducts comprehensive surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) through systematic data collection, analysis, and interpretation to identify trends, outbreaks, and opportunities for intervention.
- Leads and participates in outbreak investigations, implementing immediate control measures and conducting thorough post-outbreak analyses to prevent recurrence.
- Ensures full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., CMS, OSHA) and accrediting body standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, DNV) by staying current with all requirements.
- Develops, reviews, and revises infection prevention policies, procedures, and protocols based on evidence-based guidelines, best practices, and regulatory changes.
- Serves as the primary subject matter expert and consultant to all hospital departments on matters of infection control, including sterilization, disinfection, and environmental cleaning practices.
- Designs and delivers engaging, targeted education and training programs for all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and visitors on infection prevention principles and practices.
- Monitors, analyzes, and reports infection data, trends, and program activities to key internal committees (e.g., Infection Control Committee, Patient Safety Committee) and external regulatory agencies (e.g., CDC's NHSN).
- Performs regular environmental rounds and audits of patient care and ancillary areas to assess compliance with infection control standards and provide real-time coaching and feedback.
- Collaborates closely with Employee/Occupational Health to manage the prevention, investigation, and follow-up of communicable disease exposures and illnesses among healthcare personnel.
- Provides expert consultation during pre-construction risk assessments (ICRA) for all renovation and new construction projects to mitigate infection risks from dust and environmental pathogens.
- Leads and supports performance improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice projects aimed at the strategic reduction of HAIs, such as CLABSI, CAUTI, and SSI.
- Evaluates new products, equipment, and technologies for their infection control efficacy, safety, and impact on clinical workflow before introduction into the facility.
- Maintains a constant state of readiness for regulatory and accreditation surveys, acting as a key point of contact and representative for infection control matters.
- Champions a robust culture of safety by promoting and monitoring key initiatives like hand hygiene compliance, appropriate use of PPE, and adherence to standard and transmission-based precautions.
- Analyzes and interprets microbiological and antibiotic susceptibility data in collaboration with the laboratory and Antimicrobial Stewardship Program to identify patterns of resistance.
Secondary Functions
- Acts as a liaison with local and state public health departments for the mandatory reporting of communicable diseases and collaborative response to community-wide health threats.
- Facilitates the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in collaboration with pharmacy and medical staff to promote the appropriate and judicious use of antibiotics.
- Provides expert guidance on the selection and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and contributes to the facility's overall PPE strategy and management.
- Investigates clusters of infections and potential community-acquired outbreaks using advanced epidemiological methods to determine the source and implement effective control measures.
- Mentors and precepts new infection prevention staff, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals rotating through the department.
Required Skills & Competencies

- Certification in Infection Control (CIC): CIC certification is strongly preferred or must be obtained within a specified timeframe.

Minimum Education:

- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Master of Public Health (MPH), or a Master's degree in Epidemiology or a related science.
- Current Certification in Infection Control and Epidemiology (CIC) issued by CBIC.
