Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive, ongoing surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) using established criteria from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).
- Systematically collect, analyze, and interpret complex infection data to identify significant trends, emerging patterns, potential outbreaks, and areas for targeted intervention.
- Lead and execute thorough epidemiological investigations into clusters of infections or potential outbreaks to rapidly determine the source, mode of transmission, and extent of the problem.
- Develop, review, and continuously update evidence-based infection prevention and control policies, procedures, and protocols in alignment with the latest scientific evidence and regulatory standards.
- Perform regular, in-depth environmental rounds and compliance audits in patient care areas, sterile processing departments, operating rooms, and other critical locations to ensure adherence to infection control protocols.
- Act as the primary consultant and subject matter expert for all hospital departments on matters related to infection prevention, sterilization, disinfection, asepsis, and isolation precautions.
- Design, deliver, and evaluate engaging and effective education and training programs for all levels of healthcare staff, new hires, patients, and visitors on crucial infection control principles.
- Ensure the organization's continuous readiness for and compliance with inspections and surveys from regulatory and accrediting bodies like The Joint Commission, CMS, and state health departments.
- Manage the timely and accurate reporting of communicable diseases to the appropriate local, state, and federal public health agencies as mandated by law.
- Critically evaluate the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of new products, equipment, and technologies related to infection control before their introduction and use within the facility.
- Collaborate closely with occupational health services to manage employee exposures to infectious diseases, oversee post-exposure prophylaxis, and guide the employee immunization program.
- Serve as an active and influential member of multidisciplinary committees, including the Infection Control Committee and Patient Safety Committee, to drive organization-wide safety improvements.
- Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive hand hygiene program, which includes monitoring compliance through various methods and providing direct feedback to clinical units.
- Advise on facility construction, renovation, and major maintenance projects, providing critical input to ensure that design and work practices minimize the risk of infection transmission.
- Create and disseminate clear, concise, and actionable reports on infection surveillance data, program activities, and improvement initiatives to senior leadership, medical staff, and governance bodies.
- Lead and coordinate multifaceted performance improvement (PI) initiatives and rapid-cycle improvement projects aimed at reducing the incidence of specific HAIs like CLABSI, CAUTI, and SSI.
- Maintain an exceptional level of professional knowledge by staying current with emerging infectious diseases, pivotal research findings, and evolving regulatory requirements in the field.
- Serve as the primary point of contact and coordinator during an infectious disease outbreak or public health emergency, leading the institutional response and communication efforts.
- Assess individual patient infection risks and provide expert recommendations to clinical teams regarding the appropriate use of standard and transmission-based isolation precautions.
- Champion a pervasive culture of safety and accountability throughout the organization by consistently promoting infection prevention as a shared, fundamental responsibility for all staff.
- Manage the entire data submission process to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and other mandatory reporting systems, ensuring the utmost accuracy, integrity, and timeliness.
- Review and analyze antimicrobial usage data in close collaboration with the antimicrobial stewardship program to identify opportunities for optimizing antibiotic use and reducing resistance.
