Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions

- Execute envelope expansion and clearance flights, progressively extending operational limits while applying strict safety protocols, gating criteria and real-time decision rules.
- Evaluate flight-control systems including fly-by-wire logic, autopilot/autothrottle modes, handling law changes and degraded-mode behavior under nominal and off-nominal conditions.
- Test, validate and troubleshoot avionics, sensors, mission systems and cockpit human-machine interfaces; identify anomalies and provide actionable feedback to engineering teams.
- Perform system functional checks and emergency procedure validation for propulsion, fuel, electrical and environmental systems under both normal and failure scenarios.
- Coordinate and fly customer demonstration sorties, acceptance flights and production verification missions to confirm design changes, retrofits or software updates meet contractual and operational requirements.
- Lead in-flight anomaly management: detect, diagnose and mitigate in-flight failures; execute recovery procedures and capture detailed incident reports for engineering review and corrective action.
- Conduct formation, high-angle-of-attack, departure/arrival handling and approach/landing trials to validate handling qualities across operational regimes and mission profiles.
- Support certification and regulatory processes by preparing compliance evidence, flight test reports and data packages required by national airworthiness authorities (FAA, EASA or military certification boards).
- Work with telemetry engineers to optimize live data streaming for real-time monitoring, safety chase coordination and ground-based test conductor decision-making.
- Collaborate with simulation teams to correlate flight test results with aerodynamic, propulsion and system models; refine simulation fidelity and recommend model updates based on flight-derived data.
- Mentor junior pilots and co-ordinate pilot training in test techniques, safety culture, sortie preparation and debrief methodologies to improve team capability and knowledge transfer.
- Implement and enforce flight test safety management practices, including flight envelope gating, chase aircraft procedures, and emergency response planning for all experimental sorties.
- Prepare comprehensive post-flight analysis including performance charts, time histories, annotated video, root-cause assessments and prioritized engineering action items.
- Manage and maintain test aircraft airworthiness in coordination with maintenance teams—overseeing test instrumentation installs, pre-flight inspections and return-to-service criteria.
- Liaise with program managers, systems engineers and manufacturing teams to track corrective actions, verify fixes in follow-on flight trials, and support configuration control.
- Participate in trade studies and design reviews, using flight test results to influence future aircraft iterations, avionics upgrades and safety improvements.
- Ensure all flight test activities meet organizational, contractual and regulatory safety standards, maintain logbooks and traceability of test data, and contribute to continuous improvement of flight test processes.
- Communicate technical findings clearly to stakeholders, prepare executive summaries for leadership and contribute to published test reports, safety bulletins and certification dossiers.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline; or equivalent military pilot experience.
Preferred Education:
- Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
- Graduation from an accredited Test Pilot School (e.g., U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Empire Test Pilots’ School, National Test Pilot School, or equivalent).

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:

- Completion of an accredited test pilot school or formal flight test training program.
- Demonstrated flight test experience in high-performance jets, including hands-on telemetry-driven sorties and envelope expansion.
- Prior military test pilot background or equivalent civilian experimental/test pilot program experience.
- Active or eligible security clearance for defense or classified test programs (as required by program).
