Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously interpret and work from detailed technical drawings, blueprints, and cutting lists to ensure all components are manufactured to precise specifications.
  • Select, measure, and mark out timber and other wood-based materials with precision, ensuring optimal use of resources and minimizing waste.
  • Safely and skillfully operate a full range of woodworking machinery, including table saws, spindle moulders, planers, thicknessers, and mortisers.
  • Utilize a wide variety of hand and power tools with expertise to perform intricate cuts, shape components, and achieve high-quality finishes.
  • Assemble complex joinery items such as windows, doors, staircases, and fitted furniture, ensuring all joints are strong, accurate, and clean.
  • Manufacture bespoke, high-end joinery and cabinetry for residential, commercial, and heritage projects, adhering to exacting quality standards.
  • Perform both first-fix (structural work, e.g., fitting floor joists, roof trusses, partitions) and second-fix (finishing work, e.g., hanging doors, fitting architraves, skirting boards) joinery on construction sites.
  • Scribe and fit joinery components to uneven surfaces on-site, demonstrating a high level of problem-solving and finishing skill for a seamless installation.
  • Prepare and apply a variety of finishes, including veneers, laminates, stains, and lacquers, to protect the wood and achieve the desired aesthetic.
  • Conduct rigorous quality control checks throughout the manufacturing process and on completed items to guarantee they meet design and quality benchmarks.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment, both in the workshop and on-site, by adhering strictly to all health and safety regulations.
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and calibration of hand tools, power tools, and stationary machinery to ensure they remain in excellent working condition.
  • Liaise effectively with site managers, architects, and other tradespeople to coordinate work schedules and resolve any on-site issues.
  • Manage stock levels of materials and hardware for assigned projects, creating accurate material lists and requisitions as needed.
  • Fabricate and install custom-built reception desks, wall paneling, and other architectural features according to client specifications.
  • Repair, restore, or refurbish existing wooden fixtures and furniture, often requiring the replication of original period details.
  • Operate computer-aided manufacturing equipment, such as CNC routers, for the automated and precise cutting of components.
  • Construct custom jigs and fixtures to aid in the efficient and accurate production of repetitive or complex joinery tasks.
  • Provide expert advice on material selection, construction methods, and finishing options to project managers and designers.
  • Ensure all work is completed efficiently to meet project deadlines and contribute to the overall profitability of the project.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the training and mentoring of apprentices and junior members of the team, passing on valuable skills and knowledge.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of workshop processes, suggesting new techniques or equipment to enhance efficiency and quality.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert proficiency in the use of traditional hand tools, including chisels, hand planes, and saws, for fine-finishing and fitting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and safe operation of a wide range of woodworking machinery such as table saws, spindle moulders, planers, and thicknessers.
  • Proven ability to read, interpret, and execute complex technical drawings, CAD plans, and cutting lists with exceptional accuracy.
  • Experience in operating and potentially programming CNC routing and cutting machinery for high-precision manufacturing.
  • Skilled in a variety of jointing techniques, including mortise and tenon, dovetails, and other traditional or modern methods.
  • Expertise in both first-fix (structural) and second-fix (finishing) joinery for on-site installation projects.
  • Competency in preparing and applying various finishes, including stains, lacquers, veneers, and laminates.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude for calculating measurements, angles, and material requirements without error.
  • Deep knowledge of different types of timber, veneers, and man-made boards, including their properties, defects, and best applications.
  • Practical experience in scribing and fitting joinery components to irregular or uneven surfaces for a perfect, custom finish.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent, coupled with a completed formal apprenticeship in Joinery or Carpentry.

Preferred Education:

City & Guilds/NVQ Level 3 in Bench Joinery, Site Carpentry, or an equivalent advanced trade qualification.
