Primary Functions

  • Uphold and enforce the highest standards of journalistic integrity, ethics, and accuracy across all content.
  • Review, critique, and edit articles, features, and investigative reports for clarity, coherence, grammar, spelling, and style, ensuring they align with the publication's voice.
  • Collaborate closely with reporters and writers to develop compelling story ideas, refine angles, and provide constructive feedback to elevate their work.

  • Write and edit powerful, engaging, and SEO-optimized headlines, subheadings, and captions that capture audience attention and accurately reflect the story's content.
  • Manage the editorial calendar and content pipeline, planning and assigning stories to ensure a steady flow of high-quality content that covers key beats and news events.
  • Make final editorial decisions on which stories to pursue, prioritize, and publish, often under tight deadlines and in high-pressure situations.
  • Guide the visual direction of stories, working with photo and video editors to select compelling multimedia elements that enhance the narrative.
  • Ensure all content adheres to established style guides, such as AP Style, as well as in-house brand and voice guidelines.
  • Mentor and develop junior writers and editorial staff, providing guidance on reporting techniques, writing craft, and journalistic best practices.
  • Monitor real-time news feeds, social media, and analytics to identify breaking news, trending topics, and opportunities for timely coverage.
  • Restructure and rewrite content as needed for different platforms (e.g., web, social media, newsletters) to maximize reach and engagement.
  • Stay abreast of media law, including issues of libel, privacy, and copyright, to mitigate legal risks for the publication.
  • Develop and execute content strategies to grow audience engagement, readership, and subscriptions in collaboration with marketing and audience teams.
  • Oversee long-term projects and investigative series, coordinating resources and timelines to ensure successful execution from conception to publication.

Secondary Functions

  • Analyze content performance using analytics tools to understand audience behavior and inform future editorial strategy.
  • Participate in daily or weekly editorial meetings to pitch stories, discuss coverage plans, and coordinate with other departments.
