Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conceptualize, capture, and produce high-impact, technically proficient photographs for a wide range of news and feature assignments, including breaking news, sports, community events, and long-form documentary projects.
- Respond immediately and professionally to breaking news situations, often in challenging or high-pressure environments, to provide live and timely visual coverage.
- Collaborate closely with reporters, editors, and other newsroom staff to develop compelling visual narratives that complement and enhance written stories, actively participating in daily editorial planning meetings.
- Shoot, edit, and produce high-quality video content for digital platforms, including short-form social media videos, news packages, and interviews.
- Write clear, concise, and factually accurate photo captions and gather detailed information in the field, adhering strictly to AP style guidelines and journalistic standards.
- Perform advanced digital image processing, toning, and color correction using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Lightroom) to ensure all visual content meets the highest standards for publication.
- Manage multiple assignments simultaneously under tight, daily deadlines, ensuring the timely transmission of visual assets from the field for both digital-first publishing and print production cycles.
- Curate and prepare compelling photo galleries and other visual--first content for our website and social media channels to drive reader engagement.
- Maintain a comprehensive and organized digital archive of all photographic work, employing proper metadata and keywording for future accessibility and use.
- Uphold the highest ethical standards of journalism, ensuring all images are captured and presented truthfully, without manipulation that would alter the reality of the scene.
- Proactively generate original story ideas that can be told effectively through visual journalism, pitching them to editors for consideration.
- Maintain all issued photography, video, and lighting equipment in excellent working condition, performing routine checks and reporting any needs for repair or replacement.
- Utilize a variety of lighting techniques, including natural light, on-camera flash, and multi-strobe setups, to create high-quality images in any given environment.
- Transmit photos and video from remote locations using FTP clients, mobile technology, and other transmission software to meet strict publication deadlines.
- Establish and maintain a strong network of contacts within the community to gain access and generate tips for unique visual story opportunities.
- Travel as required, sometimes on short notice, to cover assignments both within the local coverage area and on a regional or national level.
- Engage with our audience by contributing to social media platforms, providing behind-the-scenes context and promoting visual work.
- Research assignments thoroughly to understand the context, key individuals, and potential visual opportunities before arriving on scene.
- Work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as news events require.
- Ensure all visual content is optimized for various platforms, including web, mobile, social media, and print, considering a 'digital-first' workflow.
Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Expertise with professional-grade DSLR and mirrorless camera systems (e.g., Canon, Nikon, Sony) and a wide range of lenses.
- Advanced proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere Pro for photo and video editing.
- Strong knowledge of photo and video lighting techniques, including the use of strobes, LED panels, and natural light modifiers.
- Competency in shooting and editing broadcast-quality video and capturing clean audio for news packages.
- Experience with rapid remote file transmission using software like PhotoMechanic and FTP clients.
- FAA Part 107 drone pilot certification for aerial photography and videography is highly desirable.

Experience Requirements
