Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical control, wiring, and lighting systems according to NEC and local building codes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical diagrams, and schematics to determine wiring layouts for new construction and renovation projects.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctioning electrical systems, apparatus, and components using advanced test equipment and hand tools to identify and correct issues.
  • Perform all work in strict compliance with safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures, and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Install and terminate various types of electrical conduit (EMT, Rigid, IMC) and pull insulated wires or cables to complete circuits.
  • Terminate wires and make connections to circuit breakers, transformers, panelboards, motors, and other electrical components.
  • Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical equipment and fixtures, including switchgear, panelboards, and motor control centers.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on electrical systems to ensure long-term reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Plan the layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures based on job specifications, load calculations, and code requirements.
  • Advise project management or clients on the condition of electrical systems and recommend necessary upgrades or repairs to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Connect power cables to heavy equipment, machinery, and electric motors, ensuring proper phasing and connection.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits using testing devices like multimeters, ohmmeters, and meggers to ensure system integrity and safety.
  • Install and service specialized systems such as fire alarms, security networks, and data communication infrastructure.
  • Lead and mentor apprentice electricians, providing on-the-job training and guidance to ensure quality workmanship and safety.
  • Prepare detailed sketches or red-line drawings to document work performed and reflect as-built conditions.

Secondary Functions

  • Complete daily work logs, project documentation, and time sheets accurately and submit them in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with other trades on the job site, such as plumbers, HVAC technicians, and carpenters, to ensure project workflow is efficient and deadlines are met.
  • Manage on-site inventory of materials, tools, and equipment, and communicate needs to the project foreman or supervisor.
  • Participate actively in daily safety briefings (toolbox talks) and contribute to the team's overall safety culture.
  • Interface with clients or site representatives in a professional manner to provide updates and answer questions about the electrical scope of work.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • NEC Mastery: In-depth knowledge and application of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local electrical codes.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Proficient in interpreting complex electrical drawings, schematics, and one-line diagrams.
  • Conduit Bending & Installation: Skilled in bending and installing various types of conduit, including EMT, Rigid, and PVC.
  • Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Advanced ability to diagnose and repair faults in electrical circuits, systems, and equipment.
  • Motor Controls: Experience with installing and troubleshooting motor control centers, VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), and PLCs.
  • Systems Installation: Competency in installing switchgear, panelboards, transformers, and other distribution equipment.
  • Testing Equipment Proficiency: Skilled in using a wide range of electrical testing tools, including multimeters, clamp meters, meggers, and circuit tracers.
  • Low-Voltage Systems: Familiarity with the installation of fire alarm, security, and data/telecom systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of a state-recognized Electrical Apprenticeship program.
  • Valid State-issued Journeyman Electrician License.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree from a vocational school or technical college in Electrical Technology.
  • OSHA 30 Certification.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 4+ years of documented field experience as a commercial or industrial electrician.
