Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Interpret and work from complex blueprints, isometric drawings, Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and other engineering schematics to plan system layouts and installations.
- Lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference points on materials according to drawings or templates for fabrication and assembly.
- Fabricate and assemble pipe spools, structural steel supports, and related components using a full range of shop equipment and hand/power tools.
- Install, align, and secure pipes, fittings, valves, pumps, vessels, and other mechanical equipment, ensuring adherence to strict specifications and tolerances.
- Perform bolt-up and torquing procedures on flanged joints using hydraulic torque wrenches and other tensioning equipment, following precise patterns and values.
- Conduct hydrostatic and pneumatic testing of piping systems to verify system integrity and identify leaks, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Perform precision alignment of rotating equipment, such as pumps and motors, using laser alignment tools or dial indicators to prevent premature wear and failure.
- Select the appropriate type and size of pipe, fittings, and related materials (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, alloys) for each job specification.
- Cut, thread, and bend pipe to required shapes and angles using pipe cutters, threading machines, and hydraulic benders.
- Join piping segments using various methods including welding preparation, threading, brazing, soldering, and cementing.
- Operate rigging and lifting equipment, such as cranes, hoists, and chain falls, to safely move and position heavy pipes and machinery.
- Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on existing industrial piping systems and mechanical equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose issues in hydraulic, pneumatic, and other fluid systems, implementing effective and lasting repairs.
- Adhere to all company and client safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, confined space entry, and hot work permits.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, including material usage, progress reports, and as-built drawing markups.
Secondary Functions
- Mentor and provide guidance to apprentice fitters and helpers, sharing knowledge and ensuring proper techniques are used.
- Coordinate with other trades on the job site, such as welders, electricians, and insulators, to ensure efficient workflow and avoid conflicts.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, performing routine housekeeping of the work area and equipment.
- Participate in daily toolbox talks, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and other safety meetings to promote a culture of safety excellence.
- Identify potential project conflicts or design issues and communicate them effectively to the foreman or supervisor for resolution.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Blueprint & Isometric Drawing Interpretation: Ability to read and understand complex P&IDs, isometric and orthographic drawings.
- Pipe Fabrication & Fitting: Expert-level skills in measuring, cutting, threading, and bending various pipe materials.
- Welding & Jointing: Proficient in fitting pipe for welding (tack welding skills are a major plus) and knowledge of various joining methods.
- Rigging & Signaling: Certified or highly experienced in safe rigging practices and crane signaling.
- Hydrostatic & Pneumatic Testing: Experience in setting up and executing pressure tests to verify system integrity.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:

- Certificate or Associate's Degree from a vocational or technical college.
- Additional certifications such as NCCER Plus, OSHA 30, or specific rigging qualifications.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 4+ years of hands-on experience as a journeyman-level fitter/pipefitter after completion of an apprenticeship.
