Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform complex diagnostic tests on all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, electrical, and HVAC, using advanced diagnostic equipment and software to accurately identify faults.
Execute major and minor repairs on gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines, including but not limited to timing belts, water pumps, head gaskets, and full engine overhauls.
Conduct comprehensive vehicle inspections and preventative maintenance services, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid flushes, according to manufacturer guidelines and shop standards.
Service and repair vehicle braking systems, including ABS and electronic parking brakes, by replacing pads, rotors, calipers, and hydraulic components to ensure optimal stopping power.
Diagnose and repair intricate vehicle electrical systems by tracing wiring harnesses, testing sensors, reprogramming control modules, and resolving complex electronic faults.
Repair and service steering and suspension components, including shocks, struts, ball joints, and control arms, followed by performing precision four-wheel alignments.
Maintain and repair vehicle climate control systems (HVAC), including diagnosing refrigerant leaks, recharging systems, and replacing compressors, condensers, and evaporators.
Troubleshoot and repair transmission and drivetrain systems, including automatic and manual transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, and CV axles.
Utilize digital service manuals, online wiring diagrams, and technical service bulletins (TSBs) to research and apply the correct repair procedures for a wide range of vehicles.
Road test vehicles before and after repairs to verify customer complaints, isolate unusual noises, and confirm that all issues have been successfully resolved.
Calibrate and reprogram Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and collision avoidance systems following component replacement.
Perform state-mandated vehicle safety and emissions inspections, accurately recording results and advising on necessary repairs for compliance.

Secondary Functions

Document all work performed, parts used, and recommended services accurately and thoroughly on digital and paper repair orders.
Communicate effectively with service advisors to provide detailed explanations of diagnoses, required repairs, parts needed, and estimated time for completion.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the service bay, adhering to all company policies and OSHA safety standards.
Keep up-to-date with the latest automotive technology, repair techniques, and industry trends through continuous training, online courses, and professional development.
Mentor and provide technical guidance to apprentice technicians, sharing knowledge and best practices to foster team growth and skill development.
Perform welding and light fabrication tasks as needed for exhaust system repairs or other structural component fixes.
Handle and dispose of hazardous materials, such as used oil, coolant, and other chemicals, in accordance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
Manage parts inventory for assigned jobs, ensuring the correct parts are ordered, inspected upon arrival, and available to complete repairs efficiently.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Advanced Diagnostic Proficiency: Expertise in using scan tools (e.g., Snap-on, Autel, Bosch), oscilloscopes, and manufacturer-specific software to diagnose complex electronic and engine management issues.
ASE Certifications: Possession of multiple ASE certifications (e.g., A1-A8, L1) is highly desirable and demonstrates a broad knowledge base.
Engine & Transmission Repair: In-depth knowledge of internal combustion engines and automatic/manual transmission systems for complete tear-down and rebuilds.
Electrical System Diagnosis: Strong ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams to trace and repair shorts, opens, and other complex electrical faults.
HVAC System Expertise: Certified and proficient in diagnosing and repairing automotive air conditioning systems, including compliance with Section 609 regulations.
Brake and Suspension Systems: Comprehensive skill in servicing all aspects of modern brake systems (including ABS and regenerative braking) and suspension components.
ADAS Calibration: Experience and training in calibrating Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems using specialized alignment and targeting equipment.
Welding and Fabrication: Basic to intermediate skills in MIG welding for exhaust and minor structural repairs.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED.
Certificate from a post-secondary automotive vocational or technical school.

Preferred Education:

Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of professional, hands-on experience as an automotive technician or mechanic.

Preferred:

5+ years of experience in a dealership or independent repair shop environment.

Specific experience with European, Asian, or domestic brands, or with heavy-duty/diesel vehicles, depending on the shop's specialty.
