This role requires a master's eye for detail, a deep understanding of materials and techniques, and a commitment to safety and efficiency. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute all phases of surface preparation, including scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, and priming to ensure surfaces are ready for a high-quality finish.
  • Expertly apply paints, stains, varnishes, and other finishes to a variety of interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers, and various spray equipment.
  • Meticulously mask, tape, and cover all adjacent surfaces, such as trim, floors, and furniture, to protect them from paint and overspray.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine project requirements, quantities of materials, and application methods.
  • Skillfully mix and match paints and stains to achieve specified colors and consistencies, performing precise color matching on-site as needed.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain all painting equipment, including airless sprayers, power washers, and sanders, ensuring they are in safe and efficient working order.
  • Erect and work safely from scaffolding, ladders, and various types of lifts and aerial platforms to access all areas of a project.
  • Perform high-quality drywall repairs, including taping, mudding, and texturing, to create a seamless and paint-ready surface.
  • Conduct final inspections of your work to ensure a uniform, flawless finish that is free of drips, runs, and other imperfections, and perform necessary touch-ups.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and OSHA safety standards, including proper handling of hazardous materials and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Prepare and apply specialty coatings, such as epoxies, urethanes, and anti-corrosive materials, according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Manage on-site inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment, communicating needs to the supervisor to avoid project delays.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with clients, supervisors, and other trade professionals to coordinate work and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, performing thorough clean-up at the end of each day and upon project completion.
  • Provide guidance and on-the-job training to apprentice painters and helpers, sharing knowledge of best practices and techniques.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common painting issues, such as paint failure, moisture problems, and difficult-to-cover surfaces.
  • Apply wood finishing techniques, including staining, sealing, and lacquering, on surfaces like cabinetry, doors, and trim.
  • Accurately track and report hours worked and materials used for each project to assist with job costing and billing.
  • Work efficiently to complete projects within established timelines and budget constraints without compromising on quality.
  • Perform both interior and exterior painting duties in commercial, industrial, and residential environments, adapting techniques to different conditions.

  • Assist with job site setup and breakdown, including loading and unloading tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Perform minor carpentry repairs as needed to prepare surfaces for painting.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory log of paints, supplies, and equipment stored in the shop or company vehicle.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED is preferred. Relevant work experience may be substituted.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a vocational or trade school in a painting or construction-related program.
  • Completion of a registered Painter Apprenticeship program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of documented, professional experience as a painter, demonstrating progression in skill and responsibility.

  • Prior experience in a leadership or mentorship capacity, such as a lead hand or crew leader.
