Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot complex digital audio and video recording systems (e.g., FTR, CourtSmart, VIQ) during live court proceedings to ensure a clear and accurate official record.
  • Manage the setup, testing, and operation of all courtroom evidence presentation equipment, including document cameras, projectors, monitors, and annotation tools.
  • Provide immediate, real-time technical support and guidance to judges, attorneys, jurors, and court staff on the use of all courtroom technology.
  • Perform diagnostics and resolve hardware, software, and network connectivity issues related to courtroom systems, minimizing disruption to legal proceedings.
  • Maintain a meticulous and detailed log of all court proceedings recorded, annotating key events, speaker identifications, and case information for future reference.
  • Process and fulfill official requests for copies of digital audio/video records, ensuring proper duplication, formatting, and secure delivery to authorized parties.
  • Install, configure, and perform regular maintenance on courtroom technology hardware, such as microphones, cameras, speakers, mixers, and control panels.
  • Conduct routine pre-session checks and preventative maintenance on all audio-visual and IT equipment to ensure constant operational readiness.
  • Train judicial officers and court personnel on the effective and proper use of new and existing courtroom technology, software, and presentation systems.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for setting up and managing video conferencing and teleconferencing equipment for remote appearances, arraignments, and testimony.
  • Ensure the physical and digital security, integrity, and chain of custody for all electronic evidence and official court recordings.
  • Calibrate audio levels, camera positions, and video settings to achieve high-quality recordings that adhere to judicial and evidentiary standards.
  • Assist judicial staff with the management and administration of electronic case filing (ECF) and case management systems (CMS) as needed.
  • Coordinate directly with the central IT department and external vendors for advanced equipment repairs, system upgrades, and new technology installations.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to courtroom technology usage and performance metrics.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by providing insights on technology needs and potential improvements within the judiciary.
  • Collaborate with business units, such as the Clerk's office, to translate data and technology needs into actionable engineering and support requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the broader court technology or IT department.
  • Manage and maintain a comprehensive inventory of all technical equipment, spare parts, and consumable supplies for assigned courtrooms.
  • Assist in the technical aspects of the jury selection process, including the operation of jury management software and presentation tools.
  • Develop and update technical documentation, user manuals, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all courtroom systems.
  • Assist in the redaction of sensitive or confidential information from audio and video recordings in accordance with specific court orders.
  • Respond to and resolve help desk tickets related to courtroom technology in a timely, professional, and well-documented manner.
  • Participate in the evaluation, testing, and recommendation of new technologies to enhance courtroom efficiency, security, and access to justice.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Courtroom Recording Systems: Proficiency with digital recording software such as For The Record (FTR), CourtSmart, VIQ Solutions, or similar platforms.
  • A/V Systems Integration: Deep understanding of audio-visual equipment, including mixers, microphones, cameras, and control systems (e.g., Crestron, Extron, AMX).
  • Evidence Presentation: Expertise in operating document cameras (e.g., Elmo), projectors, smart boards, and annotation software.
  • Video Conferencing: Skilled in setting up and managing professional video conferencing platforms like Zoom for Government, Microsoft Teams, and Cisco/Polycom hardware.
  • IT Troubleshooting: Strong ability to diagnose and resolve issues with PC/Mac hardware, Windows OS, software applications, and network connectivity.
  • Network Fundamentals: Solid knowledge of basic TCP/IP networking, cabling, and troubleshooting LAN/WAN connectivity.

Educational Background
