Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct daily sensory evaluations on raw ingredients, in-process samples, and finished juice products to ensure strict adherence to established quality and flavor gold standards.
  • Meticulously document tasting notes using established sensory lexicons and descriptive analysis techniques to profile flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, and visual appearance.
  • Participate as an objective and reliable member of an expert sensory panel, providing repeatable feedback on a wide variety of beverage products during daily evaluations.
  • Execute shelf-life studies by performing sensory evaluations on products at various stages of their lifecycle to determine flavor stability, identify potential degradation, and establish 'best by' dating.
  • Analyze and interpret sensory data to identify trends, shifts in product profiles, or potential quality deviations, and clearly communicate these findings to Quality and R&D leadership.
  • Collaborate directly with the Product Development team by providing real-time sensory feedback on new formulations, ingredient changes, and processing adjustments for new and existing products.
  • Investigate consumer complaints related to off-flavors or sensory inconsistencies, attempting to replicate the issue and identify the root cause through targeted tasting and analysis.
  • Conduct various difference tests (e.g., triangle tests, duo-trio, paired comparison) to determine if perceptible differences exist between samples, such as after a process change or with a new ingredient supplier.
  • Calibrate and maintain your sensory acuity through regular training, evaluation of reference standards, and participation in internal and external proficiency testing.
  • Assist in setting the official sensory specifications for new products, defining the acceptable range for key flavor, aroma, and texture attributes.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the screening, selection, and ongoing training of new internal sensory panel members to build a robust and reliable tasting group.
  • Maintain the sensory laboratory and tasting booths, ensuring a clean, odor-free, and organized environment that is conducive to accurate and unbiased evaluation.
  • Prepare and present samples for sensory testing in a controlled environment, ensuring all protocols for temperature, volume, randomization, and coding are strictly followed.
  • Manage the inventory, storage, and preparation of reference standards, control samples, and competitor products for panel evaluations and benchmarking activities.
  • Support marketing and sales teams by helping to develop compelling and accurate flavor descriptors for product packaging, advertising, and consumer-facing communications.
  • Generate clear and concise reports summarizing sensory findings, including graphical data representations and actionable recommendations for cross-functional teams.
  • Input sensory evaluation results and panelist feedback into a database or LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Research and evaluate supplier samples of potential new ingredients or flavor technologies, providing initial feedback to the innovation and procurement teams.
  • Ensure all tasting activities and lab procedures comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and broader food safety regulations.
  • Organize and lead informal product cuttings and tastings for non-technical staff to help build a broader culture of quality and product awareness within the company.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Descriptive Sensory Analysis: Proficient in identifying, describing, and scaling a wide range of aromas, tastes, and textures using a standardized lexicon.
  • Sensory Evaluation Methodologies: Experience with difference testing (triangle, duo-trio), descriptive analysis, and/or consumer preference testing.
  • Quality Control Principles: Solid understanding of quality control procedures, product specifications, and the importance of consistency in a manufacturing environment.
