Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and analyze complex architectural blueprints, schematics, and construction drawings to understand the requirements for structural and finish junctions.
  • Precisely measure, mark, and cut lumber, timber, plywood, and other wood-based materials according to project specifications, ensuring minimal waste and maximum accuracy.
  • Fabricate and install a wide variety of wood joints, including but not limited to mortise and tenon, dovetail, lap joints, and finger joints for structural and aesthetic purposes.
  • Construct, erect, and install wooden frameworks and structures, such as wall framing, floor joists, roof trusses, and sheathing, with a focus on the integrity of all connections.
  • Build and set intricate concrete forms, shoring, and temporary structures, ensuring they are properly aligned, braced, and capable of withstanding the pressure of poured concrete.
  • Perform high-precision finish carpentry, including the installation of trim, molding, cabinetry, stairs, and paneling, ensuring seamless joints and a polished appearance.
  • Operate a full range of professional-grade hand tools (chisels, hand saws, planes) and power tools (circular saws, miter saws, routers, nail guns) with expert proficiency and a commitment to safety.
  • Select appropriate wood types and materials for specific applications, considering factors like grain, durability, moisture content, and structural load requirements.
  • Assemble and fasten materials using a variety of fasteners, including nails, screws, bolts, and adhesives, ensuring all connections meet or exceed building codes and engineering standards.
  • Conduct quality control checks on all fabricated and installed components to guarantee they are plumb, level, square, and dimensionally accurate.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, and other trade professionals to coordinate workflow and resolve any on-site structural or design challenges.
  • Adhere rigorously to all state and federal safety regulations, including OSHA standards, and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment at all times.
  • Repair or replace damaged wooden elements in existing structures, skillfully integrating new components with the old to restore structural integrity and appearance.
  • Execute complex layout work using transits, levels, and laser measuring tools to establish precise reference points and lines for structural components.
  • Scribe and fit woodwork to irregular surfaces, such as stone or concrete, creating tight, custom-fit junctions that are both functional and visually appealing.
  • Manage material inventory for assigned tasks, providing accurate estimates and reporting any shortages or discrepancies to the site supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Perform detailed work on custom projects, such as building timber-framed entrances, pergolas, or other bespoke wooden structures that require advanced joinery skills.
  • Install hardware such as hinges, handles, locks, and closers, ensuring proper alignment and smooth functionality.
  • Take responsibility for the dismantling of temporary structures, like concrete forms and scaffolding, ensuring it is done safely and efficiently after use.
  • Stay updated on new materials, tools, and construction techniques within the carpentry trade to continuously improve efficiency and quality of work.
