Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform manual excavation, digging, and trenching using hand tools such as shovels, picks, and pry bars to prepare sites for foundations, pipes, or conduits.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools including jackhammers, pavement breakers, concrete mixers, tampers, and grinders to assist in construction and demolition tasks.
  • Assist in the installation, connection, and repair of utility lines, including water, sewer, and storm drains, ensuring proper alignment and sealing.
  • Load, unload, and transport construction materials, tools, and equipment to and from the worksite, ensuring they are properly secured and distributed.
  • Prepare and clean construction sites by removing debris, hazardous materials, and obstacles to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Direct and control the flow of traffic around the worksite by setting up signs, cones, and barricades, and performing flagging duties as required to ensure public and crew safety.
  • Assist skilled tradespeople, such as carpenters, masons, and equipment operators, by fetching tools, holding materials, and performing other supportive tasks.
  • Mix, pour, spread, and level construction materials like concrete, asphalt, and gravel for paving, patching, or creating foundational surfaces.
  • Perform basic formwork by erecting and dismantling scaffolding, shoring, and bracing to support construction activities.
  • Assist in railroad track maintenance, including replacing ties, tightening bolts, and clearing ballast from around switches and junctions.
  • Install and maintain erosion and sediment control measures, such as silt fences and straw wattles, to protect the surrounding environment.
  • Spot for heavy equipment operators to ensure safe movement and positioning of machinery, communicating via hand signals and radio.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment to ensure they remain in safe and operational condition.
  • Work effectively in various and often challenging weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, while maintaining high safety standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate actively in daily safety briefings, "toolbox talks," and site-wide safety meetings to stay informed of potential hazards and protocols.
  • Provide support for ad-hoc site needs and emergency repairs, demonstrating flexibility and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Assist with the basic inventory and tracking of tools, equipment, and materials to prevent loss and ensure availability.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by communicating clearly, cooperating with crew members, and demonstrating a strong work ethic.
  • Report any observed safety violations, potential hazards, or equipment malfunctions immediately to the site foreman or supervisor.
  • Aid in training new or less-experienced laborers on fundamental site tasks and safety procedures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Physical Strength & Stamina: Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, lift heavy objects (50-90 lbs), and work on your feet for extended periods.
  • Hand & Power Tool Operation: Proficiency in safely and effectively using common construction tools like shovels, jackhammers, power drills, and saws.
  • Site Safety Awareness: Strong understanding of construction site safety protocols, including knowledge of PPE and hazard recognition. OSHA 10 certification is highly desirable.
  • Basic Measurement & Math: Ability to take accurate measurements and perform simple calculations for cuts, mixes, and layouts.
  • Equipment Operation (Basic): Familiarity with the basic functions of small equipment such as plate compactors, pumps, or generators.
  • Traffic Control/Flagging: Experience or certification in flagging and directing traffic safely in a construction zone.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years in a physically demanding role.
