Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Conduct comprehensive and objective analysis of complex digital and physical evidence, including video, audio, financial records, and large datasets, to identify key facts, patterns, and investigative leads.
Manage the entire evidence lifecycle, meticulously documenting the intake, cataloging, chain of custody, storage, and disposition of all evidentiary items in accordance with legal and departmental protocols.
Utilize industry-standard e-discovery platforms (e.g., Relativity, Everlaw) to process, review, tag, and produce vast amounts of electronically stored information (ESI) for legal cases.
Prepare and present detailed analytical reports, data visualizations, link analysis charts, and case timelines for attorneys, investigators, and for use in court proceedings.
Develop and execute complex database queries using SQL to extract, manipulate, and analyze structured data from various criminal justice and law enforcement information systems.
Serve as a subject matter expert on evidence handling and data analysis, providing technical guidance and training to legal staff, paralegals, and law enforcement personnel.
Testify in court proceedings, depositions, and grand jury hearings as a fact or expert witness regarding the collection, analysis, processing, and interpretation of evidence.
Collaborate closely with attorneys to understand case strategy and tailor evidence analysis to support specific legal arguments, identify exculpatory information, and anticipate opposing counsel's tactics.
Perform rigorous quality control reviews on all evidence processing, data analysis, and document productions to ensure absolute accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established standards.
Maintain meticulous and defensible documentation of all analytical processes, methodologies, and findings to withstand scrutiny in legal challenges and discovery.
Identify, extract, and synthesize critical information from a wide variety of unstructured sources, including police reports, witness interviews, social media data, and digital communications.
Create sophisticated graphical representations, such as geospatial maps and network diagrams, to clearly illustrate relationships between individuals, locations, events, and evidence.
Manage large-scale document review projects, including developing review protocols, creating coding manuals, and running quality control checks on attorney review team decisions.
Redact sensitive, confidential, privileged, or personally identifiable information (PII) from documents and other evidence in preparation for production.
Evaluate the probative value and potential weaknesses of digital and physical evidence, providing critical insights to the legal team to inform case strategy and plea negotiations.
Ensure all activities involving data and evidence strictly comply with relevant laws, court orders, and privacy standards, including the Rules of Evidence and data protection regulations.
Troubleshoot technical issues within e-discovery and analytical software, providing direct support to legal teams to ensure uninterrupted progress on case-critical tasks.
Stay abreast of emerging technologies, analytical techniques, and legal precedents related to digital evidence, e-discovery, and data analytics in the justice sector.
Process and analyze data from mobile devices, computers, and other digital sources using forensic tools and methodologies (e.g., Cellebrite, EnCase, FTK).
Assist in responding to discovery requests and subpoenas by identifying, collecting, and producing relevant data and documents in a timely and legally compliant manner.

Secondary Functions

Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to answer urgent strategic questions from leadership and legal teams.
Contribute to the organization's data governance strategy and the continuous improvement of evidence management policies and procedures.
Collaborate with IT and other business units to translate legal and investigative needs into technical requirements for data systems and software procurement.
Participate in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and other agile ceremonies if working within a dedicated data engineering or analytics team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

E-Discovery Platforms: Advanced proficiency with one or more e-discovery tools such as Relativity, Concordance, Everlaw, or Logikcull, including processing, review management, and production.
Database Querying: Strong command of SQL for writing complex queries to extract, join, and manipulate data from relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
