Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive and systematic literature reviews on complex topics such as policing practices, sentencing disparities, pretrial reform, and community-based violence prevention to ground new research in existing scholarship.
  • Assist senior researchers in the design of research methodologies, including the development of survey instruments, interview protocols, and focus group guides.
  • Collect, compile, and clean quantitative and qualitative data from a wide array of sources, such as administrative records, government databases (e.g., BJS, UCR), academic studies, and primary data collection efforts.
  • Perform preliminary quantitative data analysis using statistical software, which may include running descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, and cross-tabulations to identify initial trends.
  • Code and analyze qualitative data from interviews, focus groups, and open-ended survey questions to identify key themes, patterns, and illustrative quotes.
  • Draft, edit, and fact-check a variety of written materials, including internal research memos, sections of final reports, policy briefs, literature summaries, and website content.
  • Prepare tables, charts, infographics, and other data visualizations to clearly and accurately communicate complex research findings to diverse audiences.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for ongoing research projects, including scheduling interviews, managing participant communications, and maintaining organized project documentation.
  • Assist in the preparation of presentations and materials for conferences, stakeholder meetings, and internal briefings, ensuring all information is accurate and well-presented.
  • Conduct legal and legislative research to track pending bills, analyze statutory language, and summarize court decisions relevant to the organization's policy and research agenda.
  • Summarize academic journal articles, government reports, and other publications to keep the research team informed of the latest developments in the field.
  • Help maintain project-specific databases, ensuring data entry is accurate, consistent, and adheres to data security and confidentiality protocols.
  • Participate actively in research team meetings, contributing ideas, providing progress updates, and learning from discussions about research strategy and challenges.
  • Support the grant writing process by gathering background information, compiling citations, and assisting in the drafting of research-related sections of proposals.
  • Perform quality control checks on datasets and final reports to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency before publication or dissemination.
  • Transcribe audio recordings from interviews and focus groups with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining annotated bibliographies and reference lists for major research projects using citation management software.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Statistical Software: Proficiency or familiarity with at least one statistical package such as SPSS, Stata, or R for data cleaning and analysis.
  • Microsoft Excel: Advanced proficiency, including the ability to use pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and complex formulas for data manipulation and analysis.
