Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate and meticulously monitor computer-controlled and manual industrial kilns (such as tunnel, rotary, or shuttle kilns) to fire products like ceramics, bricks, lumber, or cement.
- Accurately interpret and execute detailed firing schedules, making precise adjustments to temperature, time, and atmospheric conditions to meet product specifications.
- Load and unload kiln cars or kiln chambers using forklifts, hoists, or other material handling equipment, ensuring proper placement and spacing for optimal heat circulation.
- Continuously monitor kiln performance through control panels, gauges, pyrometers, and computer interfaces (SCADA/HMI) to detect any operational deviations.
- Conduct regular visual inspections of products before, during, and after the firing cycle to identify defects such as cracks, warping, or discoloration.
- Perform routine quality control tests on fired products, including measuring dimensions, checking hardness, and verifying color against quality standards.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate operational logs, recording firing cycle data, temperature readings, maintenance activities, and production output.
- Perform preventative and basic mechanical maintenance on kiln systems, including lubricating parts, cleaning burners, and replacing thermocouples and seals.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose operational issues and equipment malfunctions, performing minor repairs or escalating complex problems to the maintenance department.
- Strictly adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Manage the flow of materials to and from the kiln area, coordinating with other production departments to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow.
- Regulate fuel and air supply to the kiln's burners to maintain the correct temperature profile and achieve desired product characteristics.
- Analyze and interpret process data to identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency, reducing cycle times, and enhancing product quality.
- Ensure the kiln and surrounding work area are kept clean, organized, and free of hazards to maintain a safe and productive environment.
- Assist in the development and refinement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all kiln-related activities.
- Participate actively in safety meetings and continuous improvement initiatives, providing valuable feedback from a hands-on perspective.
- Monitor and manage inventory of kiln furniture (shelves, posts) and other necessary supplies, reporting any shortages.
- Operate grinding or finishing equipment to process fired products as required by production specifications.
- Train new or less experienced operators on safe kiln operation, quality standards, and procedural best practices.
- Respond effectively to kiln alarms and emergency situations, taking immediate and appropriate action to ensure personnel safety and minimize equipment damage.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in troubleshooting process deviations and contribute to root cause analysis to prevent recurrence of quality issues.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of kiln operations, energy consumption, and safety protocols.
- Work closely with Quality Control and Production Planning teams to ensure seamless workflow and consistent product output.
- Participate in daily team meetings, safety briefings, and training sessions to maintain operational excellence and team alignment.
