Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Travel to customer residences in a company-provided service vehicle to diagnose and repair a wide array of kitchen appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, ovens, ranges, cooktops, dishwashers, and microwaves.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic tools, multimeters, schematics, and technical manuals to accurately troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic system failures.
  • Perform high-quality, lasting repairs by replacing faulty components such as motors, heating elements, control boards, pumps, and compressors.
  • Provide customers with clear, non-technical explanations of the diagnosed issue, the proposed repair plan, and a detailed, transparent cost estimate before commencing any work.
  • Maintain a fully-stocked and organized service vehicle with a comprehensive inventory of common parts and tools to maximize first-call completion rates.
  • Execute sealed system repairs on refrigeration units, including diagnosis, evacuation, and precise recharging of refrigerants in strict compliance with EPA regulations.
  • Process all work orders, document services performed, manage part orders, and process customer payments accurately using a company-issued tablet or mobile device.
  • Educate homeowners on proper appliance usage, routine care, and preventative maintenance techniques to extend equipment lifespan and prevent future service calls.
  • Communicate effectively with the dispatch team and service manager regarding job status, unexpected delays, or complex technical challenges that require additional support.
  • Uphold the highest standards of safety at all times, adhering to company protocols for electrical work, lifting heavy objects, and handling materials.
  • Conduct thorough post-repair functional tests to verify that the appliance is operating to manufacturer specifications and the root cause of the issue has been resolved.
  • Disassemble and reassemble complex appliance units with precision, ensuring all panels, connections, and components are correctly and securely reinstalled.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and a courteous, helpful demeanor, representing the company brand with excellence and building customer trust and loyalty.
  • Read and expertly interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and manufacturer service manuals to effectively troubleshoot and repair a diverse range of brands and models.

  • Continuously update technical knowledge and skills by participating in manufacturer-sponsored training sessions, online courses, and company workshops.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job guidance to apprentice or junior technicians, sharing best practices and technical expertise.
  • Manage and update job statuses in real-time through the company's field service management software to ensure seamless communication and scheduling.
  • Identify opportunities to offer customers value-added services or products, such as extended warranties, water filters, or cleaning supplies, where appropriate.
  • Provide feedback to management on recurring product failures or service issues to help improve overall service strategy and training.
  • Maintain accurate records of time, travel, and materials used for each service appointment for precise job costing and payroll.
  • Handle delicate customer situations and complaints with empathy and professionalism, working to de-escalate issues and achieve a positive resolution.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Appliance Diagnostics: Proven ability to troubleshoot and identify root causes of failure in complex electrical, mechanical, and electronic systems.
  • Sealed System Repair: Expertise in refrigeration theory, diagnosis, and repair, including evacuation and recharging procedures.
    -EPA 608 Certification: Must possess a valid EPA 608 Type I or Universal Certification for handling refrigerants.
  • Schematic & Diagram Interpretation: High proficiency in reading and understanding wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and exploded-view parts diagrams.
  • Multi-Brand Knowledge: In-depth experience servicing a variety of major appliance brands (e.g., Whirlpool, GE, LG, Samsung, Bosch, Sub-Zero).
  • Electrical & Mechanical Acumen: Strong, hands-on skills with both mechanical components (motors, gears, pumps) and electrical systems (circuits, control boards, sensors).
  • Tool Proficiency: Competent use of a wide range of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment, especially multimeters.
  • Mobile Technology: Comfortable using tablets or smartphones for dispatching, invoicing, parts lookup, and communication.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree from a vocational or technical school in Appliance Repair, Electronics, or HVAC/R.

  • HVAC/R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration)

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5 years of direct, hands-on experience as a professional residential appliance repair technician.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of field experience, including work on high-end and luxury brands (e.g., Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, Thermador). Factory-certified training from major manufacturers is a significant plus.
