Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively assist lead cabinet makers and installers in all phases of custom cabinetry projects, from fabrication in the shop to final installation at client sites.
  • Accurately measure, mark, and cut various wood materials, including plywood, solid wood, and MDF, using tape measures, saws, and other cutting tools.
  • Operate a range of woodworking machinery such as table saws, miter saws, band saws, and shapers under the guidance and supervision of senior staff.
  • Perform precision assembly of cabinet boxes, face frames, drawers, and doors, ensuring all components are square, flush, and meet strict quality standards.
  • Utilize a variety of handheld power tools, including cordless drills, impact drivers, routers, and orbital sanders, to process and assemble cabinet parts.
  • Meticulously sand and prepare all wood surfaces and components, ensuring they are smooth, clean, and free of defects before the finishing process begins.
  • Assist the finishing department in preparing cabinets for spraying, which includes masking, cleaning, and moving items to and from the spray booth.
  • Install cabinet hardware with precision, including European hinges, under-mount drawer slides, decorative knobs, and pulls, ensuring proper alignment and functionality.
  • Carefully read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and cut lists to understand project specifications and ensure accurate construction and assembly.
  • Maintain a high level of quality control by inspecting parts and assembled units throughout the manufacturing process for any flaws or deviations from the plans.
  • Prepare and package finished cabinets and components for safe transportation, using blankets, cardboard, and stretch wrap to prevent damage during transit.
  • Load and unload materials, supplies, and finished products from delivery trucks, both manually and with the use of material handling equipment like pallet jacks.
  • Assist with on-site installation tasks, including carrying cabinets into the location, helping set and level base and wall units, and securing them to the structure.
  • Support the lead installation team by cutting and fitting trim, crown molding, light rail, and toe kicks to create a seamless, professionally finished appearance.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in the workshop and on job sites by regularly sweeping, disposing of waste, and returning tools to designated storage.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure they are in good working order, reporting any malfunctions to the shop foreman.
  • Help manage inventory by tracking supplies, lumber, and hardware, and notifying a supervisor when materials and consumables need to be reordered.
  • Run the edge banding machine to apply finished edges to panel components, ensuring a clean and durable result.
  • Provide general labor support throughout the shop as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to contribute to overall team success.
  • Adhere to all company safety protocols and procedures without exception, including the proper and consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like safety glasses and hearing protection.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Measurement Accuracy: Proficiency with reading and accurately using a tape measure to a 1/16th of an inch is essential.
  • Power Tool Operation: Experience operating basic woodworking power tools (e.g., table saw, miter saw, sanders, drills).
  • Blueprint Interpretation: The ability to read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, or component cut lists.
  • Material Knowledge: Basic familiarity with different wood species and sheet goods like plywood, particleboard, and MDF.
  • Construction Principles: A fundamental understanding of cabinet assembly methods and general construction principles.
  • Hand Tool Proficiency: Competence with basic hand tools such as hammers, chisels, clamps, and squares.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Diploma from a Vocational or Technical School in Woodworking, Cabinetry, or a related trade.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Carpentry
  • Industrial Arts

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years of experience in a hands-on, trade-related environment.

Preferred: 1+ year of direct experience in a custom cabinet shop, woodworking facility, or finish carpentry role is highly desirable. Candidates with a strong, verifiable portfolio of personal woodworking projects will also be considered.
