Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and analyze complex architectural drawings, blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine project requirements, including dimensions, materials, and hardware.
  • Select and grade lumber, veneers, and sheet goods, evaluating for quality, grain pattern, and structural integrity to ensure it meets project and aesthetic standards.
  • Set up and safely operate a wide range of woodworking machinery, including table saws, jointers, planers, shapers, and sanders, to cut and shape components with high precision.
  • Operate, and in some cases program, CNC (Computer Numerical Control) routing equipment for the efficient cutting of complex parts, patterns, and nested-based manufacturing.
  • Precisely measure, mark, and cut wood, laminates, and other materials according to detailed cut lists, optimizing material yield and minimizing waste.
  • Expertly assemble cabinet components, such as face frames, carcases, doors, and drawers, using a variety of joinery techniques (dowels, dadoes, rabbets, mortise and tenon) to ensure structural soundness and a flawless fit.
  • Fabricate and attach decorative trim, mouldings, and other detailed elements to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the final product.
  • Perform detailed surface preparation, including meticulous sanding and filling, to create a smooth, flawless base for finishing.
  • Apply stains, paints, lacquers, sealers, and other finishes using spray guns and hand-application techniques to achieve the desired color, texture, and durability.
  • Install hardware such as hinges, handles, pulls, and drawer slides with exacting precision to ensure smooth, reliable, and proper functionality.
  • Conduct rigorous quality control checks at all stages of production to ensure every component and final assembly meets exacting standards for fit, finish, and overall quality.
  • Construct and install custom jigs, fixtures, and templates to aid in the efficient and repeatable production of high-quality cabinet parts.
  • Manage project workflow to ensure production schedules and project deadlines are met, coordinating with other team members and departments as necessary.
  • Perform on-site installation of cabinetry when required, ensuring a perfect fit and finish by scribing, trimming, and securing cabinets to walls, floors, and ceilings.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any fabrication or assembly issues that arise, applying creative problem-solving skills to maintain project momentum and quality.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by adhering to all company safety policies and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and calibration of woodworking machinery and hand tools to ensure they remain in safe and optimal working condition.
  • Accurately track time and materials used for each project to assist with job costing, inventory management, and business analytics.
  • Collaborate with designers, project managers, and clients when necessary to clarify design details and provide expert advice on material or construction options.
  • Stay current with industry trends, new materials, advanced woodworking techniques, and emerging hardware to continuously improve craft and efficiency.
  • Package and prepare finished cabinets for safe transportation to job sites, ensuring products are protected from damage during transit.
  • Read and understand detailed shop orders and work tickets to ensure every aspect of a custom order is accurately executed from start to finish.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide guidance to apprentices and less experienced woodworkers on the team, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of raw materials, hardware, and finishing supplies, reporting on low stock levels to ensure production continuity.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives aimed at increasing efficiency, quality, and safety within the shop.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss project schedules, production challenges, and collaborative solutions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Machine Operation: High proficiency in operating stationary woodworking machinery (table saw, jointer, planer, shaper, band saw).
  • Tool Expertise: Mastery of a wide range of hand and power tools (routers, sanders, drills, chisels, etc.).
  • Blueprint Interpretation: The ability to read and accurately interpret complex blueprints, shop drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Material Science: Strong knowledge of wood species, their properties, and best applications in cabinetry, as well as an understanding of engineered wood products and laminates.
  • Joinery: Skilled in a variety of joinery techniques, both traditional (mortise and tenon, dovetails) and modern (dowel, pocket screw, biscuit).
