Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute meticulous surface preparation, including sanding, puttying, and cleaning of raw wood, MDF, and composite materials to ensure a perfect base for finishing.
  • Assist in the precise application of various finishing materials such as stains, sealers, primers, lacquers, conversion varnishes, and paints using a variety of methods.
  • Learn and operate high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) spray guns and other professional-grade finishing equipment under the guidance of the lead finisher.
  • Perform detailed masking, taping, and protection of cabinet components to ensure clean lines and prevent overspray on unintended surfaces.
  • Support the color matching process by preparing samples and assisting in the mixing of custom stains and paints to achieve exact client specifications.
  • Inspect finished pieces for defects, such as runs, sags, fisheyes, or blemishes, and perform necessary touch-ups, repairs, and polishing.
  • Manage the cleaning, maintenance, and proper storage of all finishing equipment, including spray guns, pumps, pots, and hoses, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment within the finishing department and spray booth, adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Handle and dispose of finishing chemicals, solvents, and hazardous materials in strict accordance with company policies and OSHA/EPA regulations.
  • Carefully handle, move, and rack cabinet doors, drawers, and boxes before, during, and after the finishing process to prevent damage.
  • Scuff-sand between finish coats to achieve optimal adhesion and a smooth, high-end final surface.
  • Assist in monitoring drying and curing times for different products to ensure the process moves forward efficiently without compromising quality.
  • Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and finishing schedules to understand project requirements and specifications.
  • Collaborate with the cabinet making and assembly teams to ensure a seamless workflow and consistent quality throughout the production cycle.
  • Perform final quality control checks on completed projects to guarantee they meet the company's high standards before being released for installation.
  • Aid in the assembly and disassembly of cabinet parts as needed for the finishing process.
  • Keep a detailed log of finishes used, mixing ratios, and application steps for specific jobs to ensure consistency for future orders or repairs.
  • Participate in buffing and polishing finished surfaces to achieve the desired sheen, from matte to high-gloss.
  • Assist in managing inventory of finishing supplies, including sandpaper, stains, topcoats, and solvents, and notifying the supervisor when reordering is necessary.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and training sessions to continuously improve personal skills and departmental processes.

  • Support the loading and unloading of raw materials and finished products, ensuring they are handled with care.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of finishing processes by providing feedback and suggesting efficiencies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Wood Finishing Knowledge: Foundational understanding of wood characteristics, preparation techniques, and the properties of different finishing products (stains, lacquers, varnishes).
  • Spraying Equipment Operation: Basic experience with or a strong aptitude for learning to operate and maintain HVLP spray systems and related equipment.
  • Sanding and Preparation: Proficiency in using orbital sanders, block sanding, and other techniques to achieve a uniformly smooth surface ready for finishing.
  • Color Acuity: A good eye for color and the ability to discern subtle differences in shade and tone is highly desirable.
  • Material Handling: Ability to safely handle and maneuver large and sometimes heavy cabinet components without causing damage.
  • Safety Protocol Adherence: Knowledge of and commitment to using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and following safety guidelines for handling volatile chemicals.
  • Tool and Equipment Maintenance: Mechanical aptitude for cleaning and performing basic maintenance on finishing equipment.
  • Quality Inspection: Ability to spot imperfections, such as dust nibs, runs, or inconsistent sheen, in finished surfaces.
  • Stain and Paint Application: Experience with brushing, wiping, or spraying stains and paints consistently.
  • Repair and Touch-Up: Skills in fixing minor finish defects using touch-up markers, fill sticks, or by spot-finishing.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or diploma from a vocational or technical school in a relevant trade.

  • Auto Body Repair and Refinishing
  • Furniture Making

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of hands-on experience in a related field such as professional painting, auto body prep, or a woodshop environment.

Preferred: Direct experience working in a custom cabinet shop, millwork facility, or furniture manufacturing plant with exposure to spray finishing. Candidates who can demonstrate their work through a portfolio or practical test will be highly considered.
