Core Responsibilities

As a Kitchen Mechanic, you are the cornerstone of operational readiness in any culinary environment.   • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex malfunctions in a diverse range of commercial kitchen equipment, including gas, electric, and steam-powered units like combi-ovens, fryers, grills, and dish machines.
  • Perform timely and effective repairs on commercial cooking and refrigeration equipment, sourcing and replacing necessary parts such as motors, thermostats, heating elements, and control boards to minimize operational downtime.
  • Execute a comprehensive preventative maintenance program across all kitchen appliances, conducting regular inspections, cleaning, and calibrations to extend equipment lifespan and prevent unexpected failures.
  • Install new commercial kitchen equipment, managing everything from unboxing and positioning to making final connections for electrical, gas, and water lines in strict adherence to manufacturer specifications and local safety codes.
  • Read and interpret complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to accurately diagnose and resolve equipment issues.
  • Maintain a detailed and accurate log of all service calls, maintenance activities, and repairs performed, meticulously documenting parts used, time spent, and recommendations for future action.
  • Manage a service vehicle inventory of commonly used spare parts, tools, and supplies, ensuring you are prepared for routine service calls and emergency repairs.
  • Provide excellent customer service by clearly communicating with kitchen staff and management about the nature of a problem, the estimated time for repair, and proper equipment operation techniques.
  • Train kitchen personnel on the correct and safe use of new or repaired equipment, as well as daily cleaning and basic upkeep procedures to empower the on-site team.
  • Respond promptly to emergency service requests, which may occur outside of normal business hours, to address critical equipment failures that impact kitchen operations.
  • Perform light welding, brazing, and soldering as needed for repairs on stainless steel components, piping, and refrigeration lines.
  • Ensure all work complies with health, safety, and sanitation regulations (e.g., OSHA, HACCP) to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and the kitchen staff.
  • Calibrate thermostats, timers, and other control devices to ensure equipment operates at the precise temperatures and settings required for consistent food quality.
  • Troubleshoot and repair commercial refrigeration systems, including walk-in coolers, freezers, and ice machines, which involves deep knowledge of refrigerants and sealed system repairs.
  • Evaluate the condition of aging equipment and provide data-driven recommendations to management regarding repair-versus-replacement decisions, including cost-benefit analysis.
  • Stay current with the latest industry technology, equipment models, and repair techniques by participating in manufacturer-sponsored training and professional development opportunities.
  • Safely handle and dispose of hazardous materials, such as cleaning chemicals and used refrigerants, according to all environmental regulations.
  • Work independently in the field, managing your own schedule, travel route, and job priorities to efficiently service multiple client locations.
  • Collaborate effectively with facilities management, general contractors, and vendors on larger kitchen renovation or equipment upgrade projects.
  • Perform diagnostic tests on equipment components using specialized tools like multimeters, pressure gauges, and combustion analyzers to pinpoint root causes of failure.
  • Address and repair issues with commercial ventilation and exhaust hood systems to ensure proper air quality and fire safety in the kitchen.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Strong working knowledge of commercial gas, electric, and steam equipment mechanics.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Expertise in troubleshooting and repairing commercial refrigeration systems, with sealed system experience being a major plus.
