Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously prepare all kitchen surfaces for painting, including comprehensive cleaning, degreasing, scuff-sanding, and stripping of old finishes to ensure optimal adhesion.
  • Expertly disassemble and label all cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, and carefully reassemble them upon project completion.
  • Perform high-precision masking of all non-target surfaces, including countertops, backsplashes, appliances, floors, walls, and ceilings to protect from paint and dust.
  • Set up and manage on-site spray areas or portable spray booths, ensuring proper ventilation and containment procedures are followed.
  • Apply primers, undercoats, and professional-grade topcoats to cabinets using HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) or airless spray systems for a smooth, factory-like finish.
  • Execute flawless brush and roll work on cabinet boxes, trim, and other areas where spraying is not practical.
  • Perform detailed wood repairs, including filling grain, holes, cracks, and dents with appropriate wood fillers and putties to create a perfect canvas.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and highly organized job site throughout the project lifecycle, from initial setup to final cleanup.
  • Conduct thorough quality control inspections of your own work to identify and correct any imperfections, such as runs, sags, or debris in the finish.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with homeowners, providing project updates, answering questions, and ensuring a positive customer experience.
  • Manage and maintain all painting equipment, including spray guns, pumps, hoses, and safety gear, ensuring they are clean and in excellent working order.
  • Accurately mix and tint paints to match specified colors, ensuring consistency across all components of the project.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and industry safety standards, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like respirators, gloves, and eye protection.
  • Transport materials and equipment to and from job sites safely using a company vehicle.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with minor carpentry or drywall repairs related to the kitchen remodeling process as needed.
  • Provide feedback to management on new products, tools, and techniques to improve quality, efficiency, and safety.
  • Train and mentor apprentice painters on proper preparation and application techniques.
  • Collaborate with project managers and other trades to ensure a smooth and efficient project schedule.
  • Manage on-site inventory of paints, primers, masking materials, and sundries, reporting needs to ensure no project delays.
  • Educate clients on the proper care and maintenance of their newly refinished cabinets to ensure long-lasting durability and beauty.
  • Handle and dispose of all chemical products and waste materials according to environmental and safety regulations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • HVLP & Airless Spray Systems: Expertise in the setup, operation, and maintenance of professional-grade spray equipment.
  • Cabinet Refinishing: Deep knowledge of the entire cabinet painting process, from disassembly and prep to spraying and reassembly.
  • Surface Preparation: Mastery of techniques including chemical stripping, sanding, degreasing, and filling for various substrates (wood, MDF, laminate).
  • Color Matching & Mixing: Ability to accurately match existing colors and mix custom paint formulas.
  • Wood Repair: Proficiency in using wood fillers, Bondo, and epoxies to repair imperfections in wood surfaces.
  • Product Knowledge: Strong understanding of different paint systems, including lacquers, conversion varnish, enamels, and water-based urethanes.
  • Precision Masking: Skill in using tape and masking paper/plastic to create sharp, clean paint lines and protect property.
  • Brush & Roll Finesse: Ability to produce a high-quality, smooth finish with traditional application tools when required.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-5+ years of professional painting experience, with a portfolio of completed work.

Preferred:

  • At least 2 years of direct experience specializing in residential kitchen cabinet refinishing and spraying. Verifiable experience with high-end finishes and working in occupied homes is a significant plus.
