Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute precise grinding, shaping, and beveling of knife blades on various belt grinders to meet exacting design specifications and performance standards.
  • Operate a diverse range of workshop machinery, including but not limited to surface grinders, buffing machines, drill presses, and sandblasters, while adhering to strict safety protocols.
  • Perform meticulous hand-finishing tasks such as sanding handle materials, polishing blades to a mirror or satin finish, and deburring all metal components to ensure a flawless feel and appearance.
  • Conduct the detailed assembly of folding and fixed-blade knives, ensuring all components like blades, handles, liners, and hardware fit together with perfect alignment and smooth function.
  • Carry out in-process and final quality control inspections, using calipers, visual checks, and functional tests to identify and quarantine any products that deviate from our high-quality standards.
  • Assist in the heat treatment and cryogenic processing of steel, carefully following established recipes to achieve the optimal hardness, toughness, and edge retention for each blade.
  • Safely and accurately measure, mix, and apply epoxies and other industrial adhesives for securing handle scales and other bonded components.
  • Maintain a meticulously clean, organized, and safe work environment by consistently following company safety procedures and 5S lean manufacturing principles.
  • Skillfully sharpen and hone finished blades to a razor-sharp edge using a combination of automated sharpeners, guided systems, and free-hand techniques.
  • Read and interpret complex technical drawings, work orders, and production schedules to ensure tasks are completed correctly and in the proper sequence.
  • Assist in the preparation and cutting of raw materials, including steel stock, G10, carbon fiber, and exotic woods, to minimize waste and maximize efficiency.
  • Manage and monitor the inventory of production supplies and components, notifying the purchasing department of low stock levels to prevent production delays.
  • Operate laser engraving or etching machines to apply logos, model numbers, and other markings to blades and handles.
  • Test and tune the action of folding knives, adjusting detents, axles, pivots, and locking mechanisms to ensure smooth and reliable operation.
  • Learn and master multiple stations within the production line to provide versatile support and cover for team members as needed.
  • Collaborate directly with senior makers to troubleshoot production issues and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

Secondary Functions

  • Document production data, including units completed, scrap rates, and time spent on tasks, to support production tracking and efficiency analysis.
  • Participate actively in daily team meetings to discuss production goals, potential roadblocks, and opportunities for process refinement.
  • Provide constructive feedback to the design and engineering teams on the manufacturability of new prototypes and design iterations.
  • Assist in the routine cleaning and preventative maintenance of production equipment to ensure uptime and operational safety.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Machine Operation: Proven ability to safely operate workshop machinery such as belt grinders, drill presses, bandsaws, and various sanders.
  • Hand Tool Proficiency: High level of skill with files, calipers, hand drills, and other common metalworking and finishing tools.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: A strong aptitude for mechanical assembly and understanding how parts interact to create a functional whole.
  • Blueprint Reading: The ability to read, understand, and interpret technical drawings, work orders, and schematics.
  • Measurement & Inspection: Competency in using precision measuring instruments like digital calipers and micrometers to ensure tight tolerances are met.
  • Material Knowledge: Basic understanding of different types of steel, handle materials (G10, Micarta, wood), and their respective properties.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years in a hands-on production or craft-focused environment.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience in a role requiring high attention to detail, such as manufacturing, assembly, woodworking, or automotive repair. A personal portfolio or documented hobby experience in knife making, metalcraft, or a similar artisan field is highly advantageous and speaks to a genuine passion for the craft.
