Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Under direct supervision, learn and apply various sharpening techniques using grinding wheels, belt sanders, honing machines, and manual stones to achieve a precise, durable cutting edge.
  • Perform detailed visual and tactile inspections of incoming knives and blades to identify defects, wear patterns, nicks, and structural damage, documenting findings for repair plans.
  • Operate and maintain a range of industrial sharpening equipment, including hollow grinders, flat grinders, and automated sharpening systems, ensuring they are calibrated and functioning safely.
  • Master the art of deburring and honing finished edges to create a razor-sharp, smooth finish tailored to the specific application of the tool (e.g., food processing, paper cutting, textiles).
  • Strictly adhere to all company and OSHA safety protocols, including the mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and respirators.
  • Learn to differentiate between various steel types (e.g., stainless, high-carbon, powdered metal) and understand their unique properties to apply the appropriate sharpening angles and methods.
  • Execute basic repairs on knives and tools, such as tip reshaping, bolster adjustments, and handle tightening or replacement, to restore full functionality and extend the tool's lifespan.
  • Dismantle and reassemble complex cutting tools and knife assemblies, ensuring all components are cleaned, properly aligned, and torqued to specification upon completion of service.
  • Utilize precision measuring tools like calipers, micrometers, and digital angle gauges to verify blade geometry, thickness, and edge angle against customer or factory specifications.
  • Develop proficiency in balancing and truing circular blades and other rotating cutting instruments to prevent operational vibration and ensure a clean, consistent cut.
  • Document all service and repair work accurately in the company's digital tracking system, noting procedures performed, parts used, and time spent on each job order.
  • Manage a personal workflow of sharpening orders, ensuring timely completion to meet customer deadlines and service level agreements while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Participate in a structured on-the-job training program, including both hands-on practice and theoretical learning, to build a comprehensive foundation in blade technology and sharpening science.
  • Assist senior technicians in troubleshooting complex sharpening issues and performing advanced repairs on specialized industrial blades and tooling.
  • Learn to properly package and handle sharpened blades for safe transport and delivery back to the customer, ensuring edges are protected from damage and personnel are protected from injury.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe personal work station, including the regular cleaning of machinery and the proper disposal of metal filings, used belts, and waste materials.
  • Assist in managing inventory of sharpening supplies, including grinding wheels, abrasive belts, coolants, and polishing compounds, and notify the shop foreman of low stock levels.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on shop equipment as instructed, such as lubrication, belt replacement, and grinding wheel dressing, following established schedules.
  • Provide basic, professional customer service by interacting with clients during equipment drop-off and pick-up, answering preliminary questions about services and timelines.
  • Support the shipping and receiving department by carefully unpacking incoming client orders and preparing outgoing shipments for various courier services.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by observing and suggesting process enhancements for safety, quality, or efficiency within the sharpening workshop.
  • Safely operate a forklift or pallet jack to move heavy materials, crates, and equipment within the facility after completing required certification training.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with a curiosity for understanding how machines and tools work.
  • High degree of manual dexterity and superior hand-eye coordination for precise, controlled movements.
  • Ability to operate, or learn to operate, various types of grinding, sanding, and finishing machinery.
  • Familiarity with using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, protractors, and angle finders.
  • Basic understanding of different metal properties and metallurgy is a significant advantage.
  • Capacity to read and interpret basic technical diagrams, work orders, and instructional manuals.
  • Foundational knowledge of workshop safety procedures and the proper selection and use of PPE.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

This includes work as a butcher, chef, woodworker, machinist's assistant, or as a dedicated hobbyist knife sharpener. A demonstrated passion for working with your hands is key.
