Key Responsibilities and Required Skills for a Knit Pattern Maker
💰 $60,000 - $95,000 Annually
🎯 Role Definition
A Knit Pattern Maker is the architectural mind behind knit apparel, translating a designer's creative vision into a tangible, manufacturable, and perfectly fitting garment. This role serves as a critical bridge between the conceptual design phase and the physical production process. More than just a drafter, the Knit Pattern Maker is a technical expert in the unique properties of knit fabrics and constructions. They are responsible for creating the foundational blueprints (patterns) that dictate a garment's shape, fit, and structure, ensuring that the final product not only aligns with the design intent but also meets the brand's stringent quality and fit standards. Their expertise is fundamental to minimizing production errors, optimizing material usage, and ultimately, delivering a successful knitwear collection to the market.
📈 Career Progression
Typical Career Path
Entry Point From:
- Assistant Pattern Maker or Pattern Cutter
- Knitwear Design Assistant
- Technical Design Assistant
Advancement To:
- Senior Knit Pattern Maker
- Technical Design Manager (Knitwear)
- Head of Pattern Making or Product Development
Lateral Moves:
- Technical Designer (Specializing in Knits)

Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Interpret initial design concepts, sketches, and mood boards to develop precise, production-ready first patterns for a diverse range of knit garments, including sweaters, cardigans, dresses, and accessories.
- Utilize specialized CAD software (such as Kaledo, Lectra, Gerber) and/or traditional manual drafting techniques to create and manipulate pattern pieces for both fully-fashioned and cut-and-sew knitwear.
- Engineer patterns that are optimized for specific knit structures, including jacquards, intarsia, ribs, and jersey, considering yarn properties, gauge, and machine capabilities.
- Lead and actively participate in live fit sessions with designers and technical teams, analyzing the garment's fit, balance, and drape on a fit model or dress form.
- Execute pattern revisions and corrections with a high degree of accuracy based on feedback from fit sessions, ensuring all changes are meticulously documented and communicated.
- Develop comprehensive and detailed technical packages (tech packs) that include graded measurement specifications, detailed construction notes, and finishing instructions for factory partners.
- Create and apply precise grade rules to scale base-size patterns across a full range of sizes, ensuring consistent fit and proportions throughout the size run.
- Collaborate closely with the Design team throughout the development process to provide technical guidance on construction feasibility and offer creative solutions to achieve design goals.
- Serve as a key technical liaison with overseas and domestic factories, communicating pattern details, construction methods, and resolving any production-related queries.
- Analyze and approve pre-production samples (PPS) and top-of-production (TOP) samples, verifying that they match the approved pattern, fit, and quality standards.
- Calculate preliminary yarn consumption and material yield estimates to assist in costing and to promote efficient, sustainable use of raw materials.
- Establish and maintain a meticulously organized digital and physical library of all master patterns, blocks, and graded nests for current and past seasons.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex fit, construction, and production issues that may arise during the sampling or bulk production stages.
- Conduct research on new and innovative pattern making technologies, knit construction techniques, and software to continuously improve workflow efficiency and product quality.
Secondary Functions
- Support and mentor junior pattern makers, interns, or technical assistants, providing guidance on best practices and brand standards.
- Collaborate with the Quality Assurance team to establish and uphold consistent quality and construction standards across all knitwear categories.
- Participate in cross-functional milestone meetings, such as line reviews and pre-production handoffs, to ensure alignment across all departments.
- Partner with the Product Development team to manage sample tracking and ensure development timelines are met from initial pattern to final approval.
- Maintain a deep understanding of the brand's aesthetic and target customer to ensure the fit and feel of the garments are always on-brand.
- Assist in developing and refining foundational block patterns for core and carryover styles to expedite the development process for future seasons.
- Stay informed about emerging trends in knitwear, fashion technology, and sustainable manufacturing practices to contribute to the company's innovation goals.
