Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Drive the end-to-end development of knitwear, from initial concept and yarn selection through to pre-production approval, ensuring adherence to the seasonal calendar.
Collaborate intimately with the Design team to interpret creative concepts, providing expert guidance on feasible constructions, stitch techniques, and yarn pairings.
Engineer and develop new and innovative knit structures, stitches, and fabrications that align with the brand's aesthetic and quality benchmarks.
Create and maintain highly detailed and accurate technical packages (Tech Packs), including technical sketches, graded measurements, construction details, and Bill of Materials (BOMs).
Lead all knitwear fit sessions, analyzing garment balance and fit on live models or forms, and providing clear, actionable solutions for pattern and construction corrections.
Serve as the primary technical communication point with overseas factories and suppliers, managing daily correspondence to troubleshoot issues, clarify details, and monitor sample progress.
Meticulously review and provide precise comments on all development submits, including lab dips, yarn strike-offs, proto samples, and size sets, ensuring all components meet specifications.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive physical and digital yarn library, actively researching and sourcing new yarns that offer innovation in texture, function, and sustainability.
Calculate yarn consumption and work with sourcing partners to establish preliminary costing and ensure styles are developed within target margin goals.
Establish, document, and uphold rigorous quality and construction standards for all knitwear categories to ensure consistency across the product line.
Program, operate, and maintain in-house knitting machinery (such as Stoll or Shima Seiki) to create rapid prototypes, stitch trials, and small-scale samples.
Analyze and resolve complex quality control and production challenges by partnering with factories to identify root causes and implement lasting corrective actions.
Research and present emerging trends in knitting technology, machinery, sustainable yarns, and innovative techniques to keep the brand at the forefront of the industry.
Partner with the Materials and Production teams to plan seasonal yarn buys, manage liability, and ensure a seamless transition from development to bulk production.
Develop and standardize master block patterns and grading rules specific to knitwear, ensuring consistent fit and scaling across all sizes.

Secondary Functions

Travel internationally and domestically to partner factories for on-site product development, production oversight, and relationship management.
Mentor and guide junior members of the design and technical teams, fostering a deeper understanding of knitwear principles and best practices.
Create and maintain detailed Bill of Materials (BOMs) and style specifications within the company’s Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
Support the creation of digital knit renderings and 3D virtual samples to facilitate faster design decisions and reduce physical sampling.
Analyze customer feedback and return data related to knitwear to inform and improve future product development cycles.
Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.

Hard Skills (Technical)

Expert Knit Construction Knowledge: Deep understanding of a wide range of knit structures, including fully-fashioned, seamless, intarsia, jacquard, and cut-and-sew techniques.
Yarn Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of yarn types, fiber properties, spinning methods, and dyeing processes, with a keen eye for quality and suitability.
Technical Package Proficiency: Mastery in creating clear, concise, and thorough tech packs that leave no room for factory misinterpretation.
Fit & Pattern Correction: Strong ability to identify fit issues on a body and translate them into technical pattern adjustments and construction callouts.
PLM Software: High level of proficiency in using Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems (e.g., Centric, FlexPLM) for style creation and data management.
Adobe Creative Suite: Competency in Adobe Illustrator for creating detailed technical sketches and Adobe Photoshop for texture mapping or design callouts.
Knitting Machine Programming: Hands-on experience and proficiency with industrial knitting software such as Stoll M1+ or Shima Seiki APEX is highly desired.

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 5-10+ years of direct experience in knitwear design, technical design, or product development within the apparel industry.
