Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate and meticulously monitor industrial flat knitting machines (e.g., Shima Seiki, Stoll) to produce high-quality knit-down samples, garment prototypes, and small-batch production runs.
- Execute the complete machine setup process for new knitting jobs, a detailed task which includes needle selection and arrangement, sinker and presser-foot adjustments, and precise tensioner calibration.
- Carefully thread a variety of yarn cones through the machine's complex feeding system, ensuring correct pathways and tensions are achieved to prevent fabric faults and machine stoppages.
- Load, initiate, and manage knitting programs on the machine's console, making minor on-the-fly adjustments to tension or takedown under the guidance of a senior technician.
- Perform meticulous in-process quality inspections directly on the machine bed, vigilantly checking for knitting defects such as dropped stitches, ladders, holes, or incorrect pattern execution.
- Conduct comprehensive post-knit quality control by accurately measuring finished panel dimensions against technical package specifications to ensure strict adherence to size and shape requirements.
- Systematically identify, diagnose, and troubleshoot common machine stoppages and knitting faults, applying technical knowledge to resolve issues like yarn breaks, press-offs, and needle damage.
- Perform critical routine and preventative maintenance on all knitting machinery, which includes daily cleaning, scheduled oiling, and the careful replacement of worn or broken needles to ensure optimal performance.
- Collaborate directly and effectively with Knitwear Designers and Developers to translate their creative vision and technical sketches into tangible, high-quality knit swatches and prototypes.
- Maintain a highly organized physical swatch library, meticulously labeling, documenting, and archiving all development samples with their corresponding technical information for future reference.
- Document detailed, legible notes on machine settings, yarn performance, knitting times, and any challenges encountered during the sampling process, creating a valuable knowledge base.
- Manage the yarn inventory for the research & development and sampling area, diligently tracking usage, conducting regular stock counts, and reporting on low stock levels to prevent production delays.
- Prepare and process knitted panels for subsequent garment assembly, which may include linking, industrial washing, tumble drying, steaming, or pressing according to fabric and garment requirements.
- Assist senior staff in the creation and minor adjustment of basic knit programs using specialized CAD software, such as Shima Seiki APEX or Stoll M1+, to modify stitch patterns or shapes.
- Accurately weigh yarn cones before and after knitting to precisely calculate yarn consumption rates, providing crucial data for product costing and future production planning.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Operational knowledge of industrial V-bed flat knitting machines, with direct experience on brands like Shima Seiki, Stoll, or similar, being highly valued.
- A strong, fundamental understanding of common knit structures, including jersey, rib, purl, links-links, as well as more complex structures like jacquard and intarsia.
- The ability to confidently read and interpret technical specifications, designer sketches, and detailed garment tech packs.
- Basic proficiency in mechanical tasks and machine maintenance, including changing needles, cleaning machine beds, and performing routine lubrication.
- A solid familiarity with different yarn types (including natural, synthetic, and blended fibers), an understanding of yarn counts/gauges, and knowledge of their properties during the knitting process.
