This position is critical for ensuring operational continuity and maintaining the high-quality standards of our textile products.

📈 Career Progression

This role is designed as a structured entry point into a long-term career in textile manufacturing.

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • Graduates of Vocational or Technical School programs (e.g., Textile Technology).
  • High School Graduates with a demonstrated mechanical aptitude and interest in manufacturing.
  • Internal transfers from general production or warehouse roles seeking specialized skills.

Advancement To:

  • Knitting Machine Operator / Knitting Technician
  • Lead Knitting Technician / Shift Lead
  • Knitting Department Supervisor or Manager

Lateral Moves:

  • Dyeing or Finishing Technician Trainee
  • Quality Control Inspector (Textiles)

Core Responsibilities

The Knit Trainee will be progressively trained to assume the following responsibilities.

Primary Functions

  • Under close mentorship, progressively learn the end-to-end operation of industrial knitting machinery, including machine setup, startup sequences, monitoring for optimal performance, and proper shutdown procedures.
  • Develop the technical skill to identify and replace worn or broken components such as needles, sinkers, and jacks, ensuring minimal machine downtime and consistent fabric quality.
  • Master the process of loading yarn packages onto creels, correctly threading yarn through intricate guide paths and tensioning devices to the knitting elements.
  • Conduct continuous, in-process quality inspections of knitted fabric as it is produced, vigilantly identifying, flagging, and reporting defects like dropped stitches, holes, oil stains, or yarn inconsistencies.
  • Learn to interpret and meticulously follow technical specification sheets, production orders, and style cards to ensure fabric is produced according to precise design, weight, and construction requirements.
  • Assist senior technicians in making minor adjustments to machine settings, such as stitch length, tension, and speed, to correct quality issues or change over to a new style.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks, including lubricating moving parts, cleaning lint and debris from knitting heads and machine beds, and following established maintenance checklists.
  • Accurately document production data, including machine efficiency, number of rolls produced, downtime, and defect rates, using either manual logs or digital production monitoring systems.
  • Gain an understanding of raw material handling, ensuring the correct yarn type, count, and color is supplied to the assigned machines for each production run.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and OSHA safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), lockout/tagout procedures, and safe machine operation practices.
  • Learn the correct and safe procedure for doffing (removing) completed rolls of fabric from the machine, ensuring they are handled carefully to prevent damage or soiling.
  • Develop clear communication skills to promptly report any machine malfunctions, quality deviations, or safety concerns to the shift supervisor or lead technician for swift resolution.
  • Actively assist experienced Knitting Technicians and operators in their daily tasks, including complex machine setups, troubleshooting, and changeovers, to accelerate learning.
  • Become proficient in verifying yarn lots against work orders to prevent mixing of colors or types, ensuring product consistency throughout a production run.
  • Take ownership of the immediate work area by maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and organization, contributing to a safer and more efficient production floor.
  • Participate in formal and on-the-job training to build a foundational knowledge of different knit structures (e.g., jersey, rib, interlock) and their properties.
  • Develop diagnostic skills to identify and resolve common, minor machine stoppages, such as yarn breaks or needle faults, to improve personal efficiency and machine uptime.
  • Learn the critical importance of yarn tension and how to monitor and make basic adjustments to tensioning devices to ensure uniform stitch formation and fabric appearance.
  • Assist in the initial inspection and measurement of finished fabric rolls, checking for correct width, weight (GSM), and overall appearance against quality standards.
  • Gain familiarity with the process of loading new style programs or patterns into the knitting machine's computer console under the guidance of a technician.
  • Actively learn and apply techniques to minimize yarn waste and reduce the creation of second-quality fabric, contributing to departmental efficiency goals.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with periodic inventory counts of yarn, needles, and other essential supplies.
  • Participate actively in departmental continuous improvement projects and lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Contribute to daily team huddles by sharing progress, challenges, and safety observations.
  • Support the training of future trainees once a sufficient level of proficiency has been achieved.
