Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide expert-level technical editing for knitting patterns, meticulously checking for accuracy, clarity, and consistency in all written instructions, charts, and schematics.
  • Develop and write original, market-leading knitting patterns from initial concept to final publication, catering to a wide range of skill levels and aligning with our brand's aesthetic.
  • Consult with our design and product teams on new yarn development, providing critical feedback on fiber content, ply, weight, and color palettes to meet market trends.
  • Grade knitting patterns across a full spectrum of sizes, performing complex mathematical calculations to ensure proper fit, shaping, and yarn usage for all body types.
  • Create comprehensive, easy-to-read, and visually appealing schematics, charts, and diagrams using industry-standard software like Adobe Illustrator.
  • Knit high-quality, camera-ready samples for marketing photography, trunk shows, and promotional materials, adhering to strict deadlines and exceptional quality standards.
  • Collaborate closely with photographers, graphic designers, and marketing teams to ensure a cohesive and beautiful presentation of finished projects, patterns, and tutorials.
  • Lead engaging and informative knitting workshops, classes, and private lessons, both in-person and virtually, for knitters of all abilities.
  • Act as the primary subject matter expert on knitting, providing one-on-one consultations to designers and customers to troubleshoot complex construction problems and offer creative solutions.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive style guide for all knitting-related content to ensure brand consistency across all patterns, publications, and digital platforms.
  • Evaluate and select the most appropriate yarns for specific designs, considering drape, stitch definition, fiber properties, and the target audience's budget and skill level.
  • Manage and coordinate teams of test knitters, effectively gathering structured feedback, identifying pattern issues, and implementing necessary revisions before a public release.
  • Stay at the forefront of knitting trends, emerging techniques, and industry innovations to provide cutting-edge advice, forward-thinking designs, and fresh content.

Secondary Functions

  • Author and create supporting digital content, including video tutorials, technique-focused blog posts, and social media updates to promote patterns and build community engagement.
  • Review and analyze user-submitted patterns for technical accuracy and adherence to brand guidelines before publication on our digital platforms.
  • Provide expert advice on yarn substitution, creating resources and guides to help customers choose suitable alternatives for their projects.
  • Represent the brand professionally and enthusiastically at trade shows, fiber festivals, and industry events, serving as a knowledgeable and approachable ambassador.
  • Design and help implement educational curricula for comprehensive knitting programs, from beginner-level "Learn to Knit" courses to advanced masterclasses.
  • Conduct final quality control checks on finished knitwear samples and production pieces to ensure they meet all design specifications and construction standards.
  • Research and document complex or obscure knitting stitches and construction methods for inclusion in pattern libraries, tutorials, or future design work.
  • Assist in curating yarn collections and project kits for our e-commerce platform, ensuring a compelling and logical product selection that inspires creativity.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-level mastery of a wide array of knitting techniques, including but not limited to advanced lace, complex cables, brioche, intarsia, fair isle/stranded colorwork, and various construction methods.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in professional technical editing, pattern writing, and multi-size grading.
  • Exceptional mathematical skills, specifically for calculating gauge, ease, yardage requirements, and complex pattern repeats.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Illustrator for charts/schematics and InDesign for pattern layout).
  • Deep, hands-on knowledge of yarn properties, including fiber content, weight standards, ply, and dye methods.
  • Experience using spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets) for grading calculations and managing test knitter data.
  • Ability to create and interpret complex knitting charts and technical garment schematics.
  • Experience with digital content creation, including filming/editing video tutorials and writing for blogs or social media.
  • Familiarity with Ravelry's pattern and yarn database features for research and community interaction.
  • Knowledge of both knitting by hand and the principles of machine knitting is a strong plus.

Educational Background
