Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete setup and configuration of industrial knitting machines based on technical specifications for new styles, including needle and sinker changes, cam box adjustments, and yarn carrier settings.
  • Proactively diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic malfunctions on a diverse range of knitting machines to minimize production downtime.
  • Conduct comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules, including systematic lubrication, cleaning, inspection, and replacement of high-wear parts like needles, jacks, and selectors.
  • Perform major machine overhauls and rebuilds, disassembling and reassembling complex components to restore equipment to original operating standards.
  • Finely adjust machine parameters such as stitch length, yarn tension, fabric takedown, and operating speed to achieve precise fabric quality and weight specifications.
  • Interpret complex technical manuals, mechanical blueprints, and electrical/pneumatic schematics to facilitate effective troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Analyze knitted fabric defects (e.g., drop stitches, holes, streaks) to accurately identify the root mechanical cause and implement corrective actions.
  • Convert machine diameters and gauges as dictated by the production schedule, a process that requires high precision and mechanical expertise.
  • Monitor machine operation and performance during production runs, identifying subtle changes in sound or performance that may indicate a developing issue.
  • Install, level, and commission new knitting machinery and auxiliary equipment, ensuring it is integrated smoothly into the production line.
  • Calibrate electronic systems, sensors, actuators, and control panels to ensure accurate machine function and pattern execution.
  • Respond with urgency to all machine breakdown calls from the production floor, prioritizing repairs to mitigate impact on production targets.
  • Fabricate or modify small parts or brackets using workshop equipment like grinders, welders, and drill presses when necessary for a repair.
  • Collaborate directly with design and product development teams to provide feedback on the manufacturability of new knitting patterns and structures.
  • Test and evaluate new types of yarn and materials, making necessary machine adjustments to ensure optimal performance and fabric quality.
  • Maintain meticulous and detailed logs of all maintenance activities, repairs, and adjustments for each machine to create a comprehensive service history.
  • Ensure all machine safety guards, emergency stops, and associated safety features are properly installed, functional, and consistently utilized.
  • Manage the changeover process for different patterns, loading new programs into the machine's control unit and verifying the first articles for accuracy.
  • Work closely with machine operators, providing guidance on basic machine care and how to identify and report potential maintenance issues early.
  • Perform final quality checks on machinery after a repair or major service to confirm that it is producing first-quality fabric before handing it back to production.
  • Stay current with emerging knitting machine technology, electronics, and software through continuous learning and manufacturer training.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a comprehensive inventory of spare parts, needles, and sinkers, anticipating needs and processing orders to prevent stockouts.
  • Author and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and maintenance documentation for all knitting equipment to ensure consistency and aid in training.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance team to analyze fabric defect trends and implement machine-based solutions to permanently resolve quality issues.
  • Actively participate in plant-wide safety meetings and continuous improvement projects, providing technical insights from a maintenance perspective.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • In-depth expertise with specific industrial knitting machines, such as large-diameter circular (e.g., Mayer & Cie, Monarch, Pai Lung) or V-bed flat (e.g., Stoll, Shima Seiki).
  • Advanced proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical systems, including cams, gearing, bearings, knitting elements, and takedown mechanisms.
  • Strong diagnostic skills for electrical and electronic systems, including reading schematics, and troubleshooting PLCs, sensors, actuators, and motor controls.
  • Solid understanding of pneumatic and hydraulic systems used for machine functions.
  • Ability to read and precisely interpret mechanical blueprints, assembly drawings, and electrical schematics.
  • Extensive knowledge of yarn properties (e.g., tension, friction, elasticity) and their direct impact on the knitting process and fabric quality.
  • Expertise in knitting theory, including different stitch structures, fabric construction, and the causes of common fabric defects.
  • Proficiency with a wide array of hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Experience with machine gauge conversions and full setups from a bare cylinder.
  • Basic computer literacy for interacting with machine control interfaces, diagnostic software, and maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or a certificate from a vocational/technical college in a relevant discipline.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of hands-on experience as a knitting machine mechanic in a textile manufacturing environment.

Preferred:

  • Documented experience working on the specific machine brands and models used in the facility (e.g., Mayer & Cie, Stoll).
  • Experience in a high-volume production setting with a strong emphasis on minimizing machine downtime.
  • Formal apprenticeship training or manufacturer-led certification is highly desirable.
