Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive in-process and final inspections of knitted garments and fabric rolls, meticulously checking for defects such as dropped stitches, holes, streaks, and yarn inconsistencies.
  • Perform rigorous testing of raw materials, including yarn counts, twist, and strength, to ensure they meet precise technical specifications before entering the production cycle.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of textile testing equipment, including spectrophotometers for color analysis, bursting strength testers, and pilling testers, ensuring all equipment is calibrated and functioning correctly.
  • Diligently document all quality control checks, audit findings, and test results in the company's Quality Management System (QMS), generating detailed reports for the production and management teams.
  • Collaborate closely with knitting machine operators and technicians to troubleshoot and resolve quality issues in real-time, providing clear guidance on machine adjustments and operational best practices.
  • Analyze quality data to identify recurring defect trends, perform root cause analysis, and proactively recommend corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to improve overall production quality.
  • Manage the pre-production sample approval process, meticulously measuring and evaluating knit-down swatches and prototype garments against technical packets and design specifications.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive quality standards and visual aids for all knitting products, ensuring these standards are clearly communicated and accessible to all relevant production personnel.
  • Monitor and report on customer returns and complaints related to knit quality, conducting thorough investigations to inform process improvements.
  • Perform regular audits of the knitting floor, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), machine settings, and yarn handling protocols.
  • Evaluate the physical properties of knitted fabrics, including weight (GSM), elasticity, recovery, and hand-feel, to ensure they align with customer and brand expectations.
  • Conduct and manage shade band approvals and monitor color consistency across different production lots to prevent shade variation in finished goods.
  • Train new and existing production staff on quality inspection techniques, defect identification, and the importance of maintaining quality standards throughout the knitting process.
  • Ensure all finished products are measured accurately and fall within the acceptable tolerance levels outlined in the garment tech packs.
  • Partner with Product Development and Technical Design teams to assess the feasibility of new knit structures and provide critical quality feedback during early development.
  • Implement and monitor Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods to track and control variations in the knitting process, driving a data-informed approach to quality.
  • Validate knitting machine setups and programming prior to long production runs to prevent large-scale quality deviations.
  • Create and issue non-conformance reports for materials or products that fail to meet quality specifications and track the disposition of rejected items.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and organize the library of approved quality standards, color standards, and master samples for reference and training purposes.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and Kaizen events focused on waste reduction and quality enhancement within the knitting department.
  • Systematically inspect knitting needle beds and machine components for wear and tear that could negatively impact fabric quality.
  • Verify that yarn winding and tension settings are optimized to produce a consistent, high-quality fabric face.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • In-depth knowledge of circular, flat (e.g., Stoll, Shima Seiki), and/or hosiery knitting machinery and processes.
  • Proficiency in operating textile testing equipment (e.g., spectrophotometer, light box, crockmeter, bursting tester).
  • Strong understanding of different yarn types (natural, synthetic, blends), their properties, and their impact on knit fabric.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex garment technical packets, spec sheets, and knitting machine programs.
  • Experience with Quality Management Systems (QMS) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) for reporting, data tracking, and analysis.
