Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Supervise, coordinate, and direct all activities of knitting machine operators, technicians, and support staff across multiple shifts to ensure seamless production flow.
- Develop, implement, and monitor daily and weekly production schedules to meet output targets and delivery deadlines, adjusting for unforeseen issues.
- Achieve departmental key performance indicators (KPIs) for efficiency, output volume, scrap reduction, and on-time delivery.
- Conduct rigorous and consistent quality control inspections of raw materials (yarn) and finished knitted fabric to identify, troubleshoot, and rectify defects.
- Act as the first line of defense in diagnosing and resolving complex mechanical, electronic, and operational issues with knitting machinery to minimize downtime.
- Implement, enforce, and continuously refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all knitting processes, machine setups, and safety protocols.
- Manage and oversee all machine setups and style changeovers, ensuring correct yarn, needle, and pattern configurations are implemented efficiently.
- Train, mentor, and develop knitting department personnel, fostering a culture of skill enhancement, safety consciousness, and quality ownership.
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely production records, including machine efficiency, output logs, downtime analysis, and waste tracking reports.
- Oversee and coordinate preventative maintenance schedules for all knitting equipment in collaboration with the maintenance department to ensure optimal machine health.
- Collaborate directly with the Production Planning department to optimize production sequences, manage yarn inventory levels, and anticipate future capacity needs.
- Champion and enforce all company safety, health, and environmental policies, conducting regular safety audits, toolbox talks, and incident investigations.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the department using Lean Manufacturing principles (like 5S, Kaizen, and Root Cause Analysis) to boost productivity and reduce waste.
- Evaluate employee performance through regular feedback, coaching sessions, and formal annual reviews, addressing any performance or disciplinary issues proactively.
- Manage departmental consumables and supplies budget, ensuring resources are used efficiently and cost-effectively.
Secondary Functions
- Liaise with the Maintenance and Engineering departments to coordinate major equipment repairs, overhauls, and the installation of new technology.
- Partner with the Research & Development and Product Development teams to conduct trials for new yarns, innovative fabric structures, and sample production runs.
- Investigate and formally report on production non-conformities, quality deviations, safety incidents, and personnel issues, recommending corrective actions.
- Participate actively in cross-functional management meetings to discuss overall plant performance, strategic objectives, and collaborative improvement projects.
- Analyze production data and operational metrics to identify negative trends, uncover root causes of systemic problems, and develop data-driven improvement strategies.
- Support the evaluation and justification for capital expenditure projects, including the acquisition of new knitting machines and ancillary technology.
- Champion a positive and results-oriented team culture focused on accountability, quality excellence, and mutual respect within the knitting department.
- Ensure the department is consistently "audit-ready" for both internal and external quality, safety, and compliance inspections.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- In-depth technical knowledge of modern circular and/or flat knitting machines (e.g., Stoll, Shima Seiki, Mayer & Cie, Monarch, Orizio).
- Strong command of different yarn types (natural, synthetic, blends), their properties, and their behavior during the knitting process.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting complex technical specifications, knitting program files, pattern drafts, and machine setup sheets.
- Advanced, hands-on ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform mechanical and electronic adjustments on knitting equipment.
- Expert-level understanding of fabric quality analysis, including the identification, classification, and root cause analysis of knitting defects (e.g., drop stitches, barre, holes, contamination).
- Proficiency with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software for production tracking and reporting.
- Solid understanding and practical application of Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement tools (5S, Kaizen, VSM).
