Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and monitor industrial flat knitting machines (e.g., Shima Seiki, Stoll) to produce development samples, swatches, and small-scale production runs.
  • Assist in the setup and threading of knitting machines, including needle changes, yarn cone placement, and tension adjustments for various yarn types.
  • Interpret technical packets and design specifications to accurately translate creative vision into tangible knitted samples.
  • Execute basic programming and program adjustments on knitting machine software (e.g., Shima Seiki APEX, Stoll M1+) under the guidance of senior technicians.
  • Develop a deep understanding of different knit structures, including jersey, rib, purl, jacquard, and intarsia, and their machine capabilities.
  • Conduct quality control checks on knitted fabrics and panels, identifying and documenting defects such as drop stitches, holes, or incorrect tension.
  • Collaborate closely with the knitwear design and development teams to troubleshoot technical challenges and provide feedback on the feasibility of designs.
  • Prepare and finish knitted samples for review, which may include washing, steaming, pressing, and linking or sewing panels together.
  • Maintain detailed records of all sample development, including machine settings, yarn information, and any issues encountered during knitting.
  • Learn and perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on knitting machinery to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Manage yarn inventory for sampling, including cataloging new arrivals, winding cones, and tracking consumption for specific projects.
  • Create knit-downs and tension swatches to test new yarns and establish the correct gauge for new development projects.
  • Assist in the technical analysis of competitor's knitwear garments to understand construction, yarn usage, and finishing techniques.
  • Contribute to the creation of a physical and digital library of knit swatches, documenting all technical details for future reference.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the research and development of new and innovative knitting techniques, yarn applications, and finishing processes.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, clean, and organized knitting lab or studio environment.
  • Help prepare and package sample shipments to vendors, designers, or other company offices, ensuring all items are correctly labeled and documented.
  • Participate in team meetings to review development progress, discuss production challenges, and contribute ideas.

Required Skills & Competencies
